Found a few old threads about some of this but all of them over a year old and no follow-ups. So I'm hoping to make it to the JY either tomorrow or sunday to pull a B6 or B8 for my '90. I will probably snag an F-series trans for use with it, since the 5 speed trans I have has turned into a 3 speed  Since I'm going to be poking around on 323s and Proteges anyway I'm contemplating looking for 4 speed 323/Protege auto trans for the wifes new '88 LX. I have a festiva auto trans that I could throw in, but the idea of having OD would also be nice. I have yet to find any gear ratio listings for auto trans to find out how much of an advantage this would give in terms of fuel economy, but it should help. If anyone has info on the F3A and F4A gearing it would be much appreciated!
So I'm thinking about axles. I have read many times that the axles for a '86-'89 N/A 323 or '91-'93 N/A Capri will fit the F5MR trans in the Festiva with no problems, and that the swap only requires the fabrication of trans mounts. AZ only lists two axles for the N/A 323, one for drivers side and one for passenger side. So I'm assuming the auto and manual axles must be the same. So theoretically (depending on how much longer thec casing of the F4A is from the F5MR) you could easily install an F4A into a Festiva using the axles from a 323/Capri. However, according to Mitchells there is a PCMT (Powertrain Control Module Transmission) that recieves signals from sensors and the ECU to control the shift solenoids. Except on some '93 models where the PMCT is not a seperate unit but is part of the PCME (note to self, avoid '93s )
So far so good, and even though wiring would likely be a pain, it should be doable... except for the fact that this would be going into a carbed '88 LX, so there is no ECU to provide the info it wants. Darn, back to square one. I may try to do a 4 speed auto on an EFI festive one day, but not for a while probably
But wait, I happened to notice this at the bottom of one of the F4A diagrams.
That looks pretty simple... Its for the FU06 trans, apparently available in the 88-89 323 Autos. Its vacuum controlled as best I can tell, which means it may be a perfect candidate for a swapping into a carb car. Unfortunately none of the yards around have one at a decent price, but I will be keeping an eye out for one hopefully in a cheaper you pull it yard. For now I will be using the one from the '90 in it, since it needs to get on the road soon. Her 940 gets about 22mpg, which isn't bad for that big of a car, but still no match for even a carb/auto festy
I will post back here if I find anything else out about the "FU06" trans, and if anyone else has any info to contribute (or one for sale) I'd love to hear about it! (especially gear ratios since ultimately I'm going for economy)
