  • G25MR 5th gear swap info

After some research and a trip to Pull A Part I have found another source for the illusive 5th gear. Pause for dramatic effect.... The non turbo MX-6. I also found out that it takes less than 20 minutes to acquire the gear from the donor trans. This swap is a simple fuel saver for the fastivas out there.

I should do this swap one day  4k rpms @ 120 km/h (75 mph) really sucks lol

      1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
      1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

I've had my speedo buried and it goes to 200km/h and I was revving at 6k rpm, but my redline is 7500rpm so I had room to go

Well here's a writeup for the install (ignore the PG instructions. The 5th gear can be done in-car, at least I could in my Capri) http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?36485

From Page2 CrazyCanadian commented on the gear source:
                    G560-17-611B - Primary Shaft 5th gear
                    G514-17-308 - Secondary Shaft 5th gear

That should be the part numbers... Other wise its off the early FS 2.0L mx6/626..
I got one of my .717 5th gearsets from Clay "azgtx" on ClubProtege/TeamCapri, I think he gets $65 a set?
My other set I pulled from a 2g Probe GT transmission, apparently they're also .717 probably due to the short final drives

is there anyway to identify the .717 ratio? it is the biggest correct? are there any taller 4th gear options??

Count the teeth & divide the numbers, you get the ratio.

I don't know of anyone that's modded a 4th. That gets tricky because you have to disassemble the whole trans & press bearings off etc. The 5th is outside of the main transmission case which makes the swap easy

There are two gears that make up a "gear" in a transmission

+1 for Clay. I'll give him some reps here as words of encouragement. I purchased a VJ14-to-VJ11 swap kit and a set of brake calipers from him, and he was a fantastic seller. Highly recommended...
