  • Need help with 1.8L interchangability for my race car!

    Hello all,

So i need some help with some interchangability with the 1.8L

My miata right now is quick, but i want it to be more quick n/a because turbo is not the route for the type of racing i do... long straightaways for an hour or so of racing is a turbo cars worst night mare.

So any ways i have a couple different routes i can go with my car...

    2003 miata motor.

$200 VVT controler, 1500 dollar motor, and headers. + a bit of wiring.

    or..

stock 1.8L 84 miata motor with cams in the future or so... roughly 700 dollars.

    OR!!!!

this is my idea... low low km junkyard b8me bottom end (because of easy accecability), 99 head swap from friend with webcam camshafts.... 200 dolalrs for bottom end, 400 dollars for head swap, and another 600 in odds and ends roughly 1700 all in ...

So my main question is, what are the differences between the b8me block and the bp4w block from the EGT and miata.. are there any C/R differences? rod strength diffs? block diffs?

i know my 1.6 stuff very well as some of you know with my 1.5L turbo abortion but the 1.8L is a new venture for me

any help and input would be greatly appreciated

    thx!
    Julian.

There is a huge piled up chunk of info between the 1.8Ls listed somewhere on Miata.net. I think its in the garage. Long page with loads of pics and info on CRs, rods, strengths, weaknesses, etc... that'd be where I'd start.
    No festiva for me ATM...

Not sure what your timeline is, but I am developing a manifold to fit ITB's to the BP head. It should fit no problem in a Miata

hmmm that sounds interesting, which ITB's would bolt onto them? other than the manifold id have to worry about linkages and fuel rails and all that other stuff eh?

I read that the dohc head on the b8-me bottom end makes the assembly lighter via the crankshaft but lowers the compression a whole point?

Can you sneak the kia 2.0 engine? It seems that for long periods of time the BP doesn't always hang in there even though it's a legend in holding together with boost. I'm haunted by the story of the BP swap that was purchased on here and driven a few hundred miles in 4th gear to just blow up on the new buyer. If you are going over it with new rod bolts and things like that, it may not be an issue.

The BP injectors & fuel rail are fitted into the head so you don't need to worry about anything custom there, not like the B6T/dohc

The Manifold is being designed for 46mm throttles - GSXR 1300 throttles are 46mm. It will use the BP bore spacing so the throttles will need to be spaced out slightly, other people have done this without any issue

Hah, I've been accustomed to typing "aboot" - back in the day I frequented the Afrotechmods forum, they had installed a word filter that changed "old" to "olde" and "about" to "aboot", etc... It's kind of stuck, lol.

Regarding the BP reliability - they seem to hold up pretty darn good as long as you don't push them to extremes for long periods of time. That's the way I see them anyway, my BP+T is holding up fine

Yeah I'd add an oil cooler. Most oem turbo cars have them.

Lowering the compression ratio is something i wouldnt like to do. 8.7-1 i think is stock protege comp ratio and the miata 1.8 is 9-1
