  • B3 engine management and forged pistons.

i have recently completed a turbo conversion on a 2000 b3 festiva (aspire, sorryi am an aussie).

Just wondering if anyone knows what the best engine management would be to run. Aswell as bigger injectors.

    Mods so far.
T25 turbo, 450x300x76mm front mount, port and polished head (which dropped the comp ratio), 3" turbo back exhaust, 400hp bosch inline fuel pump, malpassi rising rate fuel pressure regulator.

Made 119hp at the wheels running 6psi.
Boost is limited due to the stock computer not being ableto control injectors to supply more fuel, aswell as stock pistons and rings wont hold the pressure.

Bottom end is getting changed out with custom forged pistons and rods soon. So boost will be bumped up to 10-12psi.

Also wondering if forged pistons are available off the shelf in the USA for the b3 engine

yeah the megasquirt looks ok, but i am looking for a totally new computer that will replace the old stock one.

i can get a microteh LTX8 installed with custom harness and dyno tuned for $2000AUS.

and u have no idea about forged pistons?

How does a port and polish lower your compression ratio? A port and polish job only touches the porting and the valve pocket. Unless you raised the combustion chamber roof or installed a thicker head gasket or somthing you didn't lower your CR AT ALL. As for forged slugs, there are companies that will produce custom pieces for you, Probe, Wiseco and I believe Venolia will even produce one offs if you have the money. The B3 festiva engine can handle 6-8 pounds of boost reliably as long as it is intercooled - keep the rings cooler.

You can upload them directly to the album.

Just select your personal gallery and upload pics. Or you'll need to host the images on an image site then link to them.

The combustion chamber was enlarged, that is how i dropped the CR.
Tried using a thicker head gasket, but couldnt get a timing belt to fit.

And with running 6-8psi, it depends on how old your engine is. Mine has done 120,000km and the rings will only hold a maximum of 6psi, anything over that and the pressure just blows past the rings.

With pistons, i can get a one off set made for $1200Aus, but am still going to look around to see if i can get a set off the shelf.

What have you done to your B3 or B6.

I have completely built a B3 from the ground up, Spending an amazing amount of time on the headwork. Of course how much power can you extract from a 1.3l? I eventually turbo'd the car and ran it for over a year before I damaged the subframe in the front of the car. Since lowering the compression ratio on the stock configuration is not required to run boost on the B3 up to 10 PSI(but fuel and spark control IS), Why did you bother? The additional thickness of a thicker headgasket can EASILY be taken up for with the timing belt adjustment. Thirty thousandths is not an overly large amount. Not only that, If you have blowby with boost on, you would have blowby with no boost as well. The rings just don't step aside and say - "WHEW - I MISSED THAT EXTRA CYLINDER PRESSURE!" and then just go back to operating like nothing ever happened. If you waste your rings, you waste them whether or not the turbo is providing boost. They are not like a valve that vents when pressure gets too high. If that was the case, I don't think we would have a single person on the planet pushing less than 30 psi and letting the rings vent the additional pressure they can't handle past them and basically making engines bulletproof. What are you using for additional fuel and spark retard?

well its not exactly alot of pressure in the cylinder running no boost. but when you start putting it in it isnt appreciative.
Only over 6psi, anything under that is fine no blow by, it is kinda like i pressure releif valve. to much pressure and it starts to leak it out.

Does anyone know about forged pistons tho.

Thats all i really need to know.

                      Pistons

I have no idea of the size of the pistons but if your going spend 1200$ on some you should cross reference some sizes and see if JUN has some that will fit. There quality is superior to anyone, utilizing the cosworth press and they have no piston slap like other aftermarket pieces. Just a suggestion.

JUN probably has absolutely nothing we could use in a Mazda/Ford/Kia engine... When did JUN start making aftermarket pistons for use in a 1.3 ltr Festiva engine? Seriously dude, where did you get that thought from? HonDUHs? Sorry no dice. -Kyle

If you don't have piston slap, chances are you DON'T have forged pistons! I haven't heard of a tech review on a set of forged pieces yet that were not noisy until they warmed up. Nature of the beast. If they don't make noise when cold, you don't have them. I'd still like to know what NUGGET is running for ignition and fuel controls on his setup.

^ Sounds like your a bit jealous... relax and stop jumping down the guys throat.

Nugget guy, trying using a set of B6T connecting rods. I've yet to hear of someone using them in a B3, but then again, who turbocharges a B3 anyways. There's a first for everything. The B6T rods are cheap and should be readily available in Australia. If someone has specs on the Festiva B3 rod, I can cross-reference my 323GT shop manual to make sure the dimensions are the same. Chances are they share the same wrist pin and journal diameters since they are the same family of engines. Weight will obviously be different so you may want to have the whole assembly balanced before you reassemble the engine.

As far as pistons go, I'm sure theres a place in Australia that can make a set of pistons for you, and they shouldn't cost $1200... that's far too much!

At least im not the only one that wants to turbo the b3 I understand there is no replacement for displacement (my 66stang is getting a 418w), but im just trying to keep the festiva light also, and a little different.

Maybee after i have the turbo set and tunned, then I will be willing to tune it with a b6, dont want have to worry about a swap AND a turbo all at once, lol. I might change my mind and go with a "built" N/A b6 though, but turbos are too fun to pass on.
