  • Strengthening the G-Series

I've come across a site with some info on strengthening the AWD G-series trannies. I'm sure that the fix they use would be just the same for the FWD as well though.

Perhaps it's been brought up already. But in the case that it hasn't, I had to share. Feel free to comment on anything else in the way of strengthening these trannies. It's what I've been looking into lately. Another thing I intend on doing is shot peening and cryo-freezing. The MFactory diff is up there on my list as well.

Also of some relevance. I realize the practicality and cost are pretty low, but it offers some good insight on how exactly they go about correcting existing weaknesses.

I've seen both those pages, thanks though. Man, if I had my car all done up already and had another $4000 to blow, yeah, I'd get some straight cut gears. I LOVE the whining they make! lol

Totally agreed. The scream from straight cut gears is second only to a good blower/supercharger setup. A combination of the two makes an absolutely killer setup. A while back, I watched a video with a track-ready Corvette screamer that had both a dog box as well as a giant blower... and the sound... words cannot even describe, bud. I wish I could find it... the transmission and blower were louder than the quad-tip exhaust. Honestly sounded better than anything I've ever heard out of Italy or F1.

FWIW: I sent that Australian company a message to see if they'll sell custom fifth gear ratios independently... because I want a solution that does better than the standard 0.717 swaps you see here. That way, I can really improve highway fuel economy without jeopardizing zippiness in and around town. I'll keep you all posted what if anything they offer!

Good idea on the 5th gear. It would no doubt be costly all the same though, as a custom order amongst expensive items. Personally, I'm a turbo guy. Love the woosh of a turbo, love a nice BOV.

Another (unlikely) option for your economy gearing is the 5th gear from a G15M-R used with the diesel FR-MDT engine, at .680. Now, I said unlikely, but hey, who knows.

I would do unspeakable things to get my hands on one of those transmissions. Especially if it were cable! Would be exactly what I need to finish the build... but I suspect that Diesel Protege never made it to North America... regrettable indeed. Maybe I'll peruse the Australian boards and see if anybody has spotted one in the junkyards there. Even just that differential would be worth a heck of a lot!

Those straight cut gears are useless. People have gotten those and almost immediately had the shafts go through the bell housing. The gears aren't a problem it's the cases.

Perhaps get cryogenic treatment of the transmission case and all the gears?

Basement, why would you cryo treat the case?

Do you know what cryo treating does and why?

This guy is running 10s on a g series with the bearing plate mod and a welded diff.

Halfway down the page is a pretty good explaination of how the mod is done.

Thank you. I had a post written up about it earlier, but i forgot to submit and it got wiped.

You can see what happens on this page: http://www.ferdster.com/94ProLX/misc/

The output shaft bearing cup punches right out of the casing.

LSD: great improvement for the stock trans. Eliminates the weakest part (crap differential) Only good till you're making "real" power, then other parts become issues.
Bearing plates: Makes the output shaft cup the weak point. "Bandaid Solution"
PAR Gearsets: $4000 you could have spent on a custom stronger trans "Expensive Bandaid"
Transmission conversion: The way to go...

Were kinda stuck with g-series though. If the yota box barely fits in a bg chassis its not going to fit in a festiva.
