Do your coils have built-in ignitors or are they bare coils? (you can tell by how many wires, normal coils will have only 2 wires, whereas a COP with built in ignitor has to have 3 minimum)
MS will know when to fire a coil by seeing a crank/cam input. with that input the MS unit will know when your pistons are at TDC and then fire at whatever you set the MS ignition settings at in the software to get her to start. From there its all just about getting the right dwell settings for your coils so you dont fry them but also get a good strong spark.Last edited by IdealSociety; 01-26-2012, 08:28 PM.1992 Festiva... Please help with my 4 newbie ??'s

i didnt wire in iac to my MS. i got impatient and just wanted the bare min to run. i wanna get a new MS3X and do everything right eventually but that takes $$$$.
if i were gonna do it all over again i would get the the MS 3 ecu and get the premade 8' harness. all the wires are labeled and makes is so much easier to wire in all the plugs for a clean look while keeping it simple. to get any real support from miataturbo(dot)net youll need to get the 1.6 miata CAS and set it up as if it were a miata.
So here are my newb questions.I want to "Dial In" the MS hardware on a UNBOOSTED Bp. Then when I get used to the software & get the bugs worked out. I'll go for the Boost, starting with a complete new fuel system that will support a lot more HP than the stock one. Basically I'll build it in well thought out stages.
1)Will the EV14's drop into my stock Bp fuel rail?
2)And FASTIVA what are the ramifications of running without IAC. Rough/lean idle mix during cold weather?
3)And what sensors/parts will I need to control my MS.(Remember I'm talkn NA for now)
Here is my list shooting from the hip...
Laptop & interface cord (What are some decent bargains that have the speed I need)?
ECM from donor engine
Crank Trigger (obviously can be disty or fab one from scratch & go off the actual crank)
MAP sensor
Coolant temp sensor
Throttle Body (can go larger later if need be correct?)
TPS
o2 sensor
4) lastly what becomes of the VICS? Nothing right? Its just eliminated? Some people like to read fiction,I prefer to read repair manuals. Weird I know-

And what gets used for crank/cam input? Thats pretty much been my question all along.91GL BP/F3A with boost

1)It looks like they will. They appear to even use the round clip unlike my square clip rx7 injectors.
2)Getting a good idle will take a better tune without an IAC. Not sure on cold weather and its effects as i dont have an IAC on my GTR intake but i also have never ran it during the winter.
3)The cable you will need is cheap, its a simple DB9 serial cable that most older laptops will also have (newer ones however have moved away from that connector and USB adapters are hit-or-miss for interfacing) A cheap laptop should be enough to work fine, i've seen older netbooks used on several different people's cars ive known.
dont need a stock ECU, you'll be going solo with the MS.
Crank Trigger (disty can be used, as can a Miata Crank Angle sensor like what i have, pic below)
MAP sensor (built into the MS unit usually stock)
Coolant temp sensor
Throttle Body (can go larger later if need be, yes)
TPS (a 4-wire from an auto version will help down the road)
o2 sensor/wideband (innovate LC-1 is the cheapest to be had, its a must for fine-tuning)
4) lastly what becomes of the VICS? Nothing right? Its just eliminated? You can setup MS to operate the VICS with a solenoid driver or even by using some of the built in functions to control it.1992 Festiva... The stock disty can be used for signal input, as can a miata CAS like i posted above with my pic.1992 Festiva... BP-T, Escort G5MR, no crossmember, aspire brakes, Megasquirt, Toyota COP's, coilovers and 6 puck SPEC clutch!

So please be patient, knowing that I will eventually turbo. And will do it according to most of youre knowlagable advice. Having said that I just read Corky Bell's"Maxium Boost",cover to cover. It was a great read, finished it in two days.It was too short whaaa:cry_smile:
next book:
Arrived 2 days ago, I'm about halfway thru it, less than 20$ used on Amazon, and it didn't even have a scratch on it.
So the next question is, what does megasquirt think about airbags? Haynes manuals won't touch the subject, so I don't know how they work, but I want to keep them functional and not blow them when I turn the key foward the first time!
Also, is there a book on building turbo'd 4-cyl engines? Interested in learning what type of motor work would actually be beneficial for certain boost pressures, say if I wanted to go around 10-15 psi which I'm not sure about yet, and the best ways of increasing compression ratio...pretty common sense stuff for alot of people, but I want to do it right the first time. I know Mr. Corky Bell touched on the subject, but I'm looking for a book completely oriented around the design of an engine and the pro's and con's of parts and engine work.
I've got an NA BP intake manifold comming with VICS, I'm hoping to be able to use it, the vics will probably save alot of gas when the car is idling and cruising at a speed, but when all the valves open the power will still be there, even if "it doesn't flow as good as a gtr manifold, and gtx manifolds flow best"......Last edited by zoom zoom; 01-26-2012, 09:13 PM.2008 Kia Rio- new beater

I should put my name back up to offer to be moderator for this part of the board, years ago i was the N/A mod but then when i got mad at my car i dropped off the face of the festiva world for like a year or so and let it just sit while i played with my VW's.
I believe i've heard rockauto.com for the COPs as per the miata CAS the best bet might be to frequent or put up a WTB on some miata forums or check out a local JY.Last edited by IdealSociety; 01-27-2012, 06:19 PM.1992 Festiva...
