ok, Dave, you are correct that there will be clearance issues. that auto trans is kinda BIG. you WILL need the protoge's harness.
now for the engine power bit: spec miata guys are pulling 225 out of their engines with a stock bottom end and IIRC stock top too! but that's at the ragged edge. for something streetable, you'll be in the 180 range if you work at it (with stock bits). there are no rockers in the BP, cams are available in many grinds, a header will need to be for an escort GT and then moded a little. you'll want cam gears, pistons and a good tune. with those in place, i see no reason why you couldn't see 200hp with relative ease.
if you go with the XR2 trans (turbo capri), you'll want the half shaft as well. don't get that trans for that price without that shaft!!!! not worth it.
