91 capri xr2 transmission and MFactory diff

I got the transmission apart, and have the ring gear and differential here in front of me. I was thinking about using a grinder to cut the rivets out, what do you guys think? Also, would a harbor freight puller be adequate for pulling the old bearings off this differential?

and for future reference, a cable clutch 91 capri transmission is 3.85:1, a 77 tooth ring gear with a 20 tooth ..other gear..?

I took it to the machine shop and they pulled the bearings off for me, the guy said he'd just use a grinder to take the rivets off, so that's what I'm going to do. If it doesn't take me too long to press the new bearings back on I might get it back together tonite.

All I ever do is use a grinder to get the rivets off, it's pretty straight forward lol

yah but if they were only gonna charge me 15-20$ to get em out, my lazy butt would have not had to do a couple hours of work lol............


I started grinding the heads off the rivets, I did 3, then started thinking, well if I grinded the heads off the other side I wouldn't be grinding into the ring gear at all....... >.<

anyway, I got 4 heads grinded off and got 1 to pop out for me, I'm breaking now so I don't burn up my grinder.

Last time I took off a ring gear, I think I had like half an hour into it, but I've also done it a few times now lol

yah well, i've got 7 rivets out, and 3 to go, one is really being a pita I already ground off both sides trying to get it really hot then beat on it.

I really need to work on my aim too, my thumb hates me.

Not sure if you noticed or not but the holes the rivets are in, are actually tapered on the corners meaning if the heads of the rivets are ground flush, the rivets is still actually wider then the hole, just by a little bit, just enough to make it ignorant to pound out with a hammer lol

I noticed, as long as you make the first hit a good one while it's nice and hot still from grinding off the head it doesn't matter. It's pretty soft metal...I only popped one out from the backside, the rest came out from the "top" I think it would be the driver side?

I called and asked about the torque specs, does 75 foot pounds sound right?!?!? or did he mean to say inch pounds?

yah I have some loctite "262" I'm going to use, everyone is saying use the blue but this stuff seems better..and it's all I have with me atm. the blue stuff is "removable" this is supposed to be a permanent thread locker.

Ftlbs would be correct on those. I think you're supposed to use Loctite on them too right?

the bolts won't fit in the ring gear -.- shoulders are too wide

not a whole lot? lol, I haven't measured them. The bolts are reverse threads.

I just called them and they sent me on a goose chase to email somebody because the phone people are only honda guys, and the guys that work with the mazda stuff don't have a phone.. so sometime in the next 24 hours I'll get an email, then email them back, then in 24 hours I'll get an email........


aand, the machine shop is closed for today.. >.<
