who makes a aftermarket electronic gauge that would work with the mazda trans? where do you get a sender

Since we can't get different speedo gears, what trans swap will allow bigger wheels?

You're overthinking this, just get a G-tech SS Pro, or the RR model...and then you've got a speedo, a g force meter (in all four directions) elapsed timer, 0-60, 1/8 mile,1/4 mile, distance verses time, graphing, etc, etc, etc. It all works off gps for ground speed NOT an OBD port, so it's accurate which is important if you have the wrong sized tires or experience other things like wheel spin. It gets its power from a cig lighter type hook up. The beauty is, you can use it for all of your vehicles. All your cars even after you don't have this car anymore, that's how you can justify it.
For tire comparisons I use this tire calc. tool. You can compare up to 5 sizes at once...remember to bookmark it!

I can put any tire on my car (limited by what will physically fit), with any trans, and any final drive and all I ever have to do is recalibrate, takes about 5 minutes (you drive exactly 2 miles, may vary depending on the speedo manufacturer) and my speedo is dead on every time. It's easy enough that I can do it every time I switch between summer and winter tires.
A speedo and sender will set you back a somewhat hefty sum, but pocket change in comparison to a transwap.Last edited by Tommychu; 10-17-2012, 10:23 PM.

not sure if you saw my other post but I downloaded this app (Ulysse Speedometer), for my Android phone (free app). I love it and you can run whatever size tires you want and you will always know your speed. Has a trip meter and stores every trip you make. Can customize a lot of the settings too.

I'm 45 and been dinking with cars ever since I could drive. In the old days you could just get a different speedo gear for the end of your cable where it went into the trans.
My current 5-speed has a cracked case where the end detent is by a PO. I'm looking at changing it. I found a BP and trans from a EGT with under 20k on it for $400.
The speedo is within 1 mph at 75, what about other speeds? I don't often drive at 75, my speeds are typically 25-55 and I deal with a lot of speed traps.
IIRC, Damkid has a guage swap.
I'd like to get closer to a 23" or 24" tire.
AFAIK the E,F and G-series trans all run off the same format of worm gear that drives the speedo cable; the # of teeth in the worms varies by vehicle and trans, and affects the speedo's reading. When you change your tire size, you should be able to just swap the worm gear or the entire speedo cable set. For example, if you're running an f-trans but are running a wheel/tire combo that tops out at 22" diameter, you should be able to drop in the Capri's speedo cable worm gear and get an accurate speed reading.
CAVEAT: I haven't tested this myself so it'd be nice if someone more knowledgeable could back me up/call me out on this.
This is what the part I'm talking about looks like, it's held in your trans by that flimsy-looking shoulder on it.
This is a link to a website that has lots of worm gears but not the ones you need, I suspect (the junkyard is a better bet anyways). I'm including this link because some of the info on there seems to corroborate what I'm saying.
