  • B3 turbo

    Hey guys,

Im looking to turbo the B3 motor in the 93 Blue Bomber. Im looking for a small turbo that doesn't take a water line for cooling, oil only is preferable. not looking to make a whole lot of power, just enough to give it a kick in the @$$. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Im not worried about all the other stuff, i already have that sorted out, just need info on turbos.

    Small and waterless.

    Thanks, R34king

      ....

Turbo from a DSM(eclipse/talon/laser) turbo/auto will work fine and one from a saab 9000 series with an auto (automatic cars have smaller turbos - general rule). Somthing with a .48 A/r is what your looking for. Although a garret super 60(like on the T-bird turbocoupes 5 spd.) would yield better numbers. When it comes to the water and oil.Just put some pipe thread plugs into the water ports on the turbo.

Thanks for all the responses guys, i was thinking about a DSM turbo but i already have one of those (90 eclipse gsx) and those turbos dont like to be run without water lines going to them. The bigger 16G is ok with it but too much for the festiva motor. Thanks again for all the responses.

I agree an eclipse/talon/laser/ and possible a Colt Garret is the way to go, look at my posts, Im creating a killer B3 and will be using a Garret.

Dont loose hope just do some investigating and check out some of the b3T cars here. You have alot of talent running around here, be sure and utilize it. Take care and good luck with your project.

              ...

Please do not confuse turbo's. They have different mounting flanges and cannot be swapped back and forth. Different brands mount to different flanges. There are TWO different sizes that came stock on most turbo cars. Automatic powered cars come with a smaller turbo to aid in getting the car spooled up and off of the line quicker. Just saying a DSM turbo would be best isn't correct. If you mounted a 14g(stock 5spd turbo) instead of the smaller 12g (stock automatic turbo) you would have alot more lag. The turbo would produce more power but would take more to spool. Even the 12g might be a bit large for a festie with a 1.3 in it. But stock turbo equipped cars with TINY turbos are getting harder to find everyday.

Hey NUGG3T, what is the red thing behind the battery, that all of your blue breather hoses go to? How much boost do you run? Who made your turbo manifold? I'm going to try a kkk Ko3 turbo on my b6. They put them on 1.8 liter audi's and vw's. Any advice for me?

can anyone give me some more links to b3 or b6 soch turbo set-ups,
i might be getting a 89 mazda 323 b6 sohc for dirt cheap and doing a cheap turbo set-up.
i own 2 boosted esccort gt's so im not new to turbos?
                          thanks

There is no cheap turbo set-up. You'll have to fab up a manifold yourself. I did it for my 89 b6. It took buying the stainless (304) bends (about $80). Having a friend take my gaskets (exhaust at engine, and both ends of the turbo and finally at the end of the down pipe.) and read them into his computer (that was free). Now we send the cnc pics to the stainless fab guy, and had him water-jet cut the flanges from 3/8 thick 304 (you won't be cutting these with a jig saw). I got the four flanges cut for free (you won't). Now you take your bends, and cut and fit them to the manifold flange. This will take some time, clue: you'll want an angle grinder like cutting wheel, and a carbide burr for your air tool to shape the holes in the hard stainless. Now pay someone to tig this together for you ( free for me again). Before you do this of course, you have to decide on a turbo. In my case I picked a kkk k03. These are very plentiful because the guys that use them are upgrading to kkk k04's. These are stock turbos on Audi/vw 1.8 liter 20 valve engines. Theses guys were crying that they run out of steam on the top end (where ever that is) hence the up grade to the slightly bigger k04. I figured if the enginers at Audi new it spools fast down low (2500rpm's)and would blow a 1.8, it should be good enough for a 8 valve 1.6. It's tiny so it fits nicely under my hood. Which by the way is another big factor. I made the exhaust manifold so everything collects to the left (facing the engine from the front of the car). Then the turbo bolts on just left of the radiator, and is actually reversed. Meaning the intake side (compressor) is now to your left (passenger side of car, remember your facing the engine from the front) and the exhaust side faces right (drivers side) so the downpipe follows the traditional exhaust path. Now you'll have to plumb in your water and oil lines. I got most of the water and oil fittings from Earl's and the oil line on e-bay. This won't be cheap. You'll need the -an fittings for the turbo, then for the hose, and the hose itself. You can buy a drain flange
(10-an) from "Function 7". You'll have to tap into your oil pan for the drain line, and I pulled the coolant lines from that pipe that runs under the exhaust manifold. There's a little hose that goes from the block to that pipe. I cut the little hose bead off the end of the one fitting and put a 5/16" brass compression fitting wlth a 5/16" brass hose barb on that. I pulled the other old pressed in hose fitting out of the block (right next to the temp sender) and tapped it for a 5/16" brass hose barb. Now plumb in the intake to your maf. With silicone elbows, clamps, maf flange, k&n filter on the turbo intake, and an aluminum tube, another $200. Now you'll need a boost gauge $50, an air fuel gauge $35. and a way to keep all of this from running too lean. Are you going to build up (replace) your pistons and rods like a real turbo engine has? are you going to somehow reduce the compression ratio to say 8.5:1 ? The way I keep this from running to lean is the "Cooling mist" water/methanol injection system, the $550 version. But you can get in the game for $300. It's a lotta work, and at this point I'd have to agree with the other guys on the forum, It would be less work and less money in the long run to just find a b6t already setup. I've spent about $1000 with the methanol injection to this point. Pm your email to me, and I'll send you some very good pics so you can see that trick manifold and how I set this all up. Good Luck

iceracerdude thanks for all the info. You have to know im not a newbie to making custom turbo set-ups even thou im a newbie to FF.com.

i can build a turbo set-up for 500 or less.
i have boosted 2 escort gt's one of my egts has around 300hp and im getting a new tune and upgradeing a few things this spring and shooting for close to 400hp(stock internals). i had to build a ton of custom stuff for each EGT, one is controlled by a megasquirt and the other gtx ecu.

i have extra turbos, extra ic's,bov's, fmu's i know they suck, tons of pipe all different wall thicknesses,
i can get flanges made for next to nothing. i have all the of tools i need to do this. im not a newbie when i comes to custom parts and boosting cars.
also this is going to be a low buck set-up so everything will not be as nice as my egt's but will function correctly.

iceracerdude sounds like you did a great job on your set-up, but there are alot of things that can be done for cheap and still be reliable. can you post some pics up of your set-up.

                              iceracerdude check you pm's
                              thanks
