Thats kool, what i think im going to do is cut the sensors and intake pipe off the airbox so its not a bulky and attach them to the filter and re-route the intake pipe to the engine like in the picture that was posted just b41996 GLi Festiva

Now if they had used FINE dust on the paper filters, they would have had VERY similar results as with the K&N. The same if they would have fed the same 'course' dust to the K&N they would have had the same results.
Case and point - Nobody lets the free world use a $285,000 machine for free . Sounds like some more AC DELCO propaganda on not using aftermarket airfilters. They didn't even give comparison of the different trucks and types of filters in them - different vehicle is going to introduce more variables.
Darkdan - Car manufacturers have been trying to discredit aftermarket parts as being garbage for YEARS. Truth is that most aftermarket parts(the good ones - no 2 cent ebay garbage here) are just as good as or better then OEM . K&N has been around forever - a good K&N is usually the first mod done to a car - because it works  . That report you have is a biased attempt at discrediting a proven product. They fudged the whole thing when they used the different dust. But most people aren't going to go read the data and find how they fudged it to make the numbers they way they are. You can't believe everything you read.

It's not what you know, it's who you know. The guys that did the tests are diesel enthusiasts and wanted to see which filters work best.
If you feel they faked it to discredit K&N instead of the pursuit of truth, go over to the dieselstop.com and find the guys that ran the tests. I'm sure they've heard it all.www.dantheoilman.com

Custom air intake
Ok so what I did to my Festiva's air box was slightly modifiy it, or so I hope. It had a little snorkel pipe coming off the side by the fender wall and it was very small and narrow and curved so I cut that off to open it up and I pulled the entire airbox out and drilled a hole in the bottom of it. About 3.5inches in diameter. And attached some screen too keep the mice and bugs out. I havent figured the added fuel economy, if any, yet but I will tell you this.... It has a much lower and better sounding "roar" when under excelleration, especially in 2nd 3rd and 4th gear. Hey it was free so why not? Took all of 10minutes to do. If you want to see pics just let me know and I'll post some.'91 Festiva GL "The Roadrunner"

^^^you just sacrificed cool fresh air for more hot air..
A TRUE CAI = cool air is piped into the intake at a higher cfm than stock...
Just a thought...
Removing restrictions in the intake will always increase the efficiency, but when you raise the air temp, say from the hot enginebay your efficiency gain would be cancelled out I'd think.

Intake mod results
I gained about 1.5-2 mpg's on a tank of gas after I opened up the air box. I normally averaged 37-38mpg on a tank of gas now my past three tanks have been 38.5 the lowest all the way up to 40.1. In response to the guy that had the custom pipe going to his airbox how did you route that thru there??? There is very little room and it looks like the belts on the engine might come into contact with the pipe, not good. What size ducting or pipe did you use to do that?'91 Festiva GL "The Roadrunner"

you can see my pvc pipe intake coming straight off the air box in the lower left corner... it's the white pipe under the intake hose.
You can see it behind the drill.

hey, there (bumping a semi-old thread) -
I like seeing these different setups, and I think I'm leaning towards the darkdan/lil red solution (pipe off the side of the box, out towards the grille, keep the rectangle filter in the stock box).
I have a vaguely related question: on all the under hood pics I've looked at, no one has this box sitting next to the PCV valve (outlined):
I don't quite get what the point of it is (doesn't appear to do... anything?). Did you guys remove yours, or did you never have them in the first place?
