  • SOHC B8 to BP swap or not

    Here is my dilemma:
The B8 performed exactly as requested. No issues, sounds great. On the racetrack it was not a fast car in the 24hours of LeMons. It could only pass the slowest cars in the straights. It seems about 20+ would be needed to bring us closer to fast. Can we get 20-25 more RELIABLE ponies cheaply out of the B8 or should we pull it keep it as a spare, and put in a BP? Since it already has the SOHC, would it be a fairly simple engine swap for a novice?

Bottom line: find possible B8 upgrades for 20+ HP or put in a BP?

Rear turbo? How reliable will the engine be with the extra boost? It is a Lemons race, how expensive is the turbo? I think it means finding a X2 in a junkyard and aquiring the parts. Sounds like fun.

Turbo will not be easy to get through the BS car Inspection. Penalty laps, I envision.

^ why? it will get you brownie points on the engineering side of things and if you hide it behind the shell of an old muffler as seen in the Madness 6 pics, that may net you even MORE brownie points.
as for reliability, keep the boost to stock 8-10lbs and roll on the throttle (no burtnouts, no clutch kicks, no hard shifts) remember: smooth is fast.

Manpower and money. Engineering and buying a turbo for the B8 or buying(maybe rebuilding) BP and installing?
Us drivers are a weak link, I can't promise no hard shifts when we are swapping 4-5 different drivers. Plus I have a Travis. image.jpg

What kind of wheels are those? Would a turbo be legal during the race?

Anything is legal as long as its cheap for the Lemons series. And they do appreciate engineering feats.
Those wheels are Enkei RPF1 with 195/60/14 Falken Azenis 615k. It looks quite aggressive.

SOHC B8 to BP swap or not

                        Well you'll need..

                        Turbo
Summit Gear driven fuel pump (7-10psi)to pump the oil back
                        1/8 brake line for feed
3/8 brake line for return (maybe cut a hole in the oil cap and thread a fitting in there with the rubber hose going to the hard line) or drill n tap the pan
                        Intercooler piping
                        Couplers
                        Flange for the turbo
                        -M3NTAL MARK! Woo!!

I may be wrong, but I thought the BP was just a SOHC B8-ME block with the DOHC head. I know the SOHC has the oil squirters for the pistons. Maybe all you would need is a DOHC head and an oil pump for a DOHC.

What are you running for rpms? Maybe you need the Aspire suspension (all of it) and wind the engine tighter headed for the turns and out brake the other guys to get under them going into the corner.
                          You gonna race that thing?

its brainless unless you already have a bp. Buy a turbo $125 get a flange and some hoses. Grab a FMU i just picked one up off CL for $40 brandnew for less than $250 you could have factory performance with a little boost!!! Gotta love forged internals ive seen and rode in couple b8 turbo cars and they are a blast.. About 10X funner than a b8. But you will never get the torque without a bp but if you are always rolling it shouldn't be an issue in boost.. 8-9lbs all day slippin clutch the whole time if you arent careful.. Just send kumalaba a message he will give you the ins and outs im sure. He had a b8 and then got a b8 rear turbo....

We can certainly do better on our driving. We do have Aspire suspension, with a good negative camber of about 2.2-2.1 in the front and 1.1-1.2 On the rears. The corner handling was still not superb either. Another thread on springs and such...(250# in the front 175# in the rear)
RPMs I tried to stay in third gear, keeping good momentum through the corner to full throttle just past the apex. I would hit 5500+ in the straightaway. Sometimes shift into fourth around 4500rpms and carry it through the corner and downshift. Even when you know you've cornered well I had to watch the Fast cars blow passed me.

I am not familiar with turbo engineering. I like the challenge, and thanks M3ntal for the quick list.
