  • G25mr Transmision parts checklist

So, I've been searching and reading up on this the last few days. I think we need a formal write up on this transmission for the swap. I currently have the stock transmission in my festy (BP swapped) and its giving me issues. I have some time before the next rally so I'd like to perform this swap. I've seen some people have already pulled this swap off, but the articles on it are a bit hard to read. What I'm looking for is a basic checklist of any parts I'll need to pull of the swap successfully. I have the g25mr from the BP I put in initially ('93 EGT), but im reading and worrying that I need a cable operated clutch, (wondering if spec stage 2 I used with the stock tranny will work), and this statement(from: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/.../message/26012) saying that I need to

1: buy a cable-op G series transmission from the only two cars that
have it: Capri XR2 or 323 GT
2: Swap bellhousings from the Capri XR2 or 323 GT with any of the
above (93 EGT in my case)

can anyone point me in the right direction here? I'd really like the 4.1 final drive, as well as the beefyness of the g25mr (compared to stock festy), to get this car more durable. As for mounting it, we are going to a modified tube frame in the front so we shouldnt have too much of an issue, besides the size of it with "gently" tapping the frame.

You've got a few options, besides the two that you mentioned. You can also
    3) convert your car to use the hydro clutch (there are a few people who have done this)
    4) use a hydro to cable "adapter" like Chris (Damkid) made - I don't know if he is still selling them. That may be your best bet, since you already have an Escort trans.

As far as other things you will need:
-The starter (I don't think the Festy one will work, haven't tried)
-flywheel/clutch for your trans (EGT or Capri/mazda for the G25 should all be the same, wether hydro or cable). The E/F series clutch/flywheel won't work in the G series.
-the sheet metal plate that goes between the engine and tranny.
-Axles from a Capri XR2 (including intermediate shaft). The Escort ones won't work, unless you either shorten them or change your lower control arms to longer ones.

Then its a matter of mounts and modifying the shift linkage.

You can also just use a Capri drivers side axle and a kia Rio one for the passenger side and bypass the need for the intermediate shaft.

        Ok so compiling these.

        - G25mr Transmission
        - BP transmission block plate
        - Starter
        - Clutch/Flywheel
        - Capris Xr2 Axles (with intermediate shaft) or Capris drivers side, Kia Rio Passenger side combination
        - Figure out Hydro Conversion or obtain Hydro-to-cable converter

or you could just buy a Capri XR2 or 323 GT transmission in full
or you can buy the bellhouseing from Capri XR2 or 323 GT and switch it with the tranny you have

2 questions: Will the Phantom Grip LSD piece work with this transmission? and is there anything else I'm missing? If anyone else has some options or suggestions for durability, it would be appreciated as well.

I'm not sure if this has been posted but here's a good tear down and rebuild of the g-series (I believe its the same one but not entirely sure)

What is this talk of swapping bell housings? Why?

And don't use a phantom grip. They're known to kill these trannies. Go with the mfactory diff.

Pro Tip, glass cannon Mazda transmissions will blow up anyway, don't get the LSD.

I've been reading on this. I have the LSD but haven't put it in because of that issue, I'm currently looking for Mfactory, but the limiting factor, as is with many of us, is money... 700 is just too much for the mfactory power boost currently.

as for swapping bell housings, thats just from the article I read. I'm guessing thats to convert the hydro to cable?

Easiest option is the G15mr (Capri XR2 or 323gt) because the cable clutch. Someone on here used an mx3 pedal assembly to get the hydro clutch to work. Do some research on that, because IIRC it has to be a certain year of mx3. Hydro clutch will be nice when done properly, but could create problems if not done well. You'll need to use the flywheel and clutch that came with the EGT, and that will work if you go g15mr as well. Stay away from unsprung racing clutches and lightened flywheels, your going to need to keep tractability and longevity in mind and both those components will defeat your purpose.Hope that helps clarify things a bit.
