  • tranny gurus, what happened and how can i make this better?

I finally tore down my spare aspire tranny, word was third gear "was out, it makes a bad grinding noise."

I gave the case and the input gearshaft to a Nissan buddy who is gonna use it as a core on his new tranny. I kept the diff and ¿primary? Gearset in hopes of one day either welding this diff up or installing a limited slip(read phantom grip?)

Anyway when I tore it apart what I think was fourth gear had some teeth sheared off like the fifth gear on this shaft. It almost seems like they touched but why would they do that?

Anyway, pics! I'll find the other thread where someone measured up a neon diff and take measurements from this one to see if its remotely possible to make a neon LSD work, supposedly they have a cheap and effective way to convert to LSD vs welding the spiders solid.

also, for any interested parties, I counted the teeth 3 times...

ASPIRE TRANSMISSIONS HAVE 19 TEETH ON THE PINION GEAR AND 69 ON THE DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR
WHICH MAKES IT A 4.0588235.... FINAL DRIVE RATIO!!

Original reason for the thread is also to figure out if that gearset is reusable, can I just file down the fifth gear teeth to make it smooth again and stick it in a tranny or will I need to swap pinion gears? If 1-5 & R gears are the same I figure it will work if 5th is ok?

Sketchman is the one who measured up his Neon diff, I just measured mine the same way he did his, and it's a little different but not a whole lot. I don't know if this "s" spring mod will have a chance yet, I don't fully understand how it works to begin with so more digging is needed.. anyway check out sketchmans post #25 page 3 that discusses the s springs and provides part numbers in this thread, then check out his post #41 on page 5 for the original pic of his diff..

Discuss making performance enhancements to the OEM-spec engine in your Festiva or Aspire.

and my pic, I copy pasted cropped and chopped this thing all together and it's a mess but you get the point

Check the ford aspire forum when I did my final drive bearings, I counted my ratio as well, seems the same? I don't remember, good thing I posted it.

Grab a seriously close and detailed picture of the gear(s).

I doubt it's possible on a small setup like this, but one of the two ring and pinion in my t750 ford got noisy, I took it apart, and ground and ground the flare/edge off, and reshimmed.

But the way these are setup, you only shim the differential side to side, so I would assume easier to tackle the bandaid job?

In any case doing so, first 1000 miles will seat itself, and there's no easy way to pull and clean magnet. I left mine out and picked a couple of spots and drilled/tapped for a couple of 3/4" magnetic plugs.

I did zero work on the lsd work. Wasn't my concern. I missed the 400miles/week, 9gal fills. So I had to get things done.
