  • lightweight flywheel

I'm considering having my flywheel lightened up some while I'm swapping the engines. The machinist is asking where he should be taking off metal, and I have no idea. What areas do you grind down to lighten it?

If the machinist needs to ask, where to take the weight off, and not how much, you need to find a better machinist!!

I think the problem was that I was asking a general machinist who hadn't worked on car parts much. I called around to some others and I'm thinking the cost will be more than I'm willing to spend. $200-300 for a couple pounds savings.

Best to stick to a machinist that does nothing but car stuff for a flywheel, since once it is lightened, it will need to be balanced as well, you really don't want Joe blow doing a flywheel, since one done by a hack may go up in a catastrophic manner.

If you are using a GM25R tranny, you should be able to find a fidanza or other flywheel made lighter.
