This kind of stuff is a lot more involved than just bolt on. Seriously, it is a lot easier to drop in a b6 from a mazda 323, but it sounds like you should get familiar with adjusting valve lash, setting timing, carb adjustments, making sure your b3 is in good running shape first. THEN worry about modifying it. This isnt a civic, and unfortunately this isnt going to be a "bolt on a CAI and fart can exhaust" type of thing.

As was mentioned, most of the festiva folks on here seem to think in terms of fuel injected models. Being an 88 you prob have a carb. If you can find a weber kit anywhere that is technically a bolt on and would give you a good performance jump, but I am pretty sure it wont be emissions legal if you live in an area where you have to deal with that.
I know how to do all of that in a motorcycle. I'm a motorcycle tech and I've been around bikes for a long time but wanna get more into cars so I'd assume they're around the same. And yes mine is carbed. And I don't have to worry about emission. And I'd never EVER just fart can a car! Lol!

Ok, cool, just was a bit concerned you were going to get in over your head on it. Seriously though, as far as go fast on an 88 carb model... not having a lot of heavy stuff in the back, and getting it in good tune is about the best you can do. I also own an 88lx and am contemplating taking a EFI b6 from a 323 and swapping the intakes and possibly going electric fuel pump if there is no mech fuel pump provisions on the EFI engine.

You need a high pressure pump for EFI in order to have enough pressure to atomize the spray. Fuel injection won't work with a mechanical pump.

meant keeping the car carbed, hence swapping intakes. Not switching to FI.

The first gen B6 8 Valve SOHC has the block off plate for the mech fuel pump, The B6 that came in the later 80's 323 and Tracers, pump should be a bolt on affair.
-93' L BP swap/e-series, coilovers, RIO front swap, redrilled festy drums, Miata 14" 7 spokes.
-88' Mazda 323 SE, work in progress..
            -85' Nissan Sentra 5 spd.

On the B6 cam I have, the pump lobe wasn't polished. Was yours polished or did you run it unpolished?

i made sure it was smooth... but no need to polish, theres enough oil flying around in there to keep it lubed and the pump doesn't take alot of power to run so the pressure on the arm is rather low.
