  • Welding cv shafts

I've successfully welded chipper knives together, take special techniques, and they were so hard on had to cut them with a plasma cutter.

I have a car that to pull transmission, to make it easy, cut cv shafts, I was going to buttweld, then sleeve and wrap ends with weld, plus plug weld.

All it does is roll around parking lot in 1st, top speed of maybe 15mph.

Think it's safe to do? I don't want to spend any more time/money killing the front end to remove engine and transmission. The donor car I killed exhaust, ps lines, fuel, coolant lines, drive shafts with a cut off wheel. 30mins it was out.

I would think in that situation it would be fine. If it never sees the roadways and stays at or under 15 I say go for it.
But I think that time spent welding the axels back together could have been spent pulling them and doing it right.

Nope, it's not. Trust me. I cut the other ones in about 5mins each. I'm not fighting rusty knuckle bolts, axle nut, rusty splines, to get around a pair of 100$ shafts with worn boots.

I got the vehicle for $30, it never sees public roads. F'it. Tool box on wheels is all it is.

It'll take 10mins to weld each one.

          Gearbox swapping done.

Holds up well. Dolly back to apartment complex and weekend completed.

Now I can spend the evening holding my child instead of a wrench.

Bump this. Driving the beech down the road! Daily!

My daily driver needs a dpf delete, tune, rawtek, and new flywheel. So been driving this van. Welds are without issue. I got a bit sloppy getting the ends butted dead center, but oh well.

If it breaks weld it again. Cheap fun and education.

This is on a van? What kind of van?
