  • Header availability for b3

I feel like i cant find a header for my 89-(she's carbed) and i need to redo the whole exhaust so I didn't want to go with the stock manifold again.

Anyplace i can find a cheap( by cheap i mean budget wise.. i dont want to spend hundreds on some custom header on a car that's worth about 300 if i was to sell it around here) header for the b3 or is there any off of other vehicles that would bolt up?

Second question is theres some sort of valve body on the right side of the air breather housing.. What is it's purpose? I have the pipe from the cat blocked because theres only the manifold with piping that ends at the firewall for the exhaust on the car.. hence i have to redo the whole thing.. the pipe from right after the manifold up to this valve deal on the side of the breather housing is still hooked up though.. is it alright to completely delete this?

For somewhat better flow, if you can find a gen1 (1986-89 323s and Tracers) B6 exhaust manifold, that would do the trick. Clean up the interior a little, do some port-matching with the gaskets.

bravekozak where did you get that header from? i tried looking up 1.6 header(s) online but they're all oval bore ports? I'm really hoping i can find one for a reasonable price online.. the exhaust, gas tank, and wheel bearings are the only things from keeping me from DD'ing this car.

And If I'm going to spend any money on the exhaust for it i'd rather go for a header than a manifold because i just would like to pull what i can power wise from the motor seeing as there is no budget drop in swap really for these things that don't require fabbing up custom stuff or I'd have just purchased another motor and trans for this thing already, there's only 80k miles on the car and the engine seems to just need some fine tuning and it looks like it could be a reliable DD.

Personally I enjoy the feel of driving a car with full exhaust and the power it brings.

But sometimes I miss the broad torque curve produced from the stock manifold and exhaust system.

          I know it sounds crazy.
          But
If I could do it all over again.

I would have a header made with primaries that made the torque peak come on at 3k like stock (currently it is 4200rpms).
But with better flowing, long tube and equal length design.

Hopefully it would increase volumetric efficiency throughout all rpms by removing the restrictive points in the manifold.
While keeping the exhaust velocity high.
The theoretical gains would be small but across the whole rpm range.
And I feel mpg would not suffer much as a result, nor low rpm power.
          Running 40psi.....in my tires.

festevil, I bought my header on the [FS] forum.

Do a search. There are lots of other interesting threads.

not much for recent activity on any threads didnt want to bump something with a last post from like 2010. SO from the looks of it the only way to get a header for this thing is have some one make one.. which in turn probably will cost as much as the car is worth.. the feeling of crushing defeat is not cool.. and i'm not aloud to post on the buying selling pages due to my account age and lack of posts...

From what i've read so far it's looking like a b6 header will work with my motor? is there any companies that still produce these?- im scrolling through the FS section but holy jeez the price people ask for a header for these engines is about what you'd spend on a set of GOOD aftermarket header(S) for a small block chevy lmao.. not much in the aftermarket department for support for these cars it seems..

That's because there's literally millions of people in the world that want sbc headers and maybe 5 that want a b3 header.

Matt Dickmeyer can still make I've but you're looking at $300-400.

Yup^ mine was $440 with flex bellow, flange and shipping costs.
And when I talk to him nowadays he talks about how after dividing up the cost by the hours he spent on each b3 header hand crafting each one.
He says he was actually making below minimum wage.

So the deal he was offering before he got chased away I believe is no longer available.

Lemme remind you guys most quotes around the nation I got for a custom tuned header was $2000 dollars.
So even if he charged $500 it would still be a deal.

Your last resort option for production made header would be a pacesetter from Australia for the festiva.
I believe it's measurements of primary sizes, primary lengths, and collector size were fairly identical to dickmeyers header.
But to have it shipped to the u.s.a may negate the cost savings.
That is if it is still available.

moltis, No problemo. They call them exractors in Australia. That's what I searched for, since the Mazda 121 DA is the sister car to the Festiva.

From what I've heard from Matt Dickmeyer, they are worse.
