  • I contacted the PO and the 8V head that was included with the car was original to the block that is currently in the car. Good sign in case I ever want to go back to the "correct" set-up.

    I have several options:

1.) Put the 8V back on the block and take the hp hit. Going this route will require the purchase of the 323 exhaust manifold, intake/tb, vaf and ecu
2.) Keep it how it is. Still need to figure out the tps and running rich issue.
3.) Get a 16V head from an Mx3, along with intake, tb, vaf and ecu.
4.) Get a B6 dohc or BP and start from scratch (last resort money-wise. This is mainly dreaming/wishful thinking)

    • I would really just try swapping injectors to the stock Festiva ones before I spent any money on anything.

The stock ECU will run fine with 1.6L and it handles my 16v head just fine too.

If you get all the matching management parts together it should be fine.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

      • I'll try and do that this weekend and see if it makes a difference.

Here are the injectors I transfered from the 90 to the 16V.

          Here are the old ones.

Still seems to backfire quite a bit. Maybe not quite as much though. Tried running the car with the tps plugged in and it acted the same as it did before.

I've only been getting 32 mpg since I put the car together. Seems awfully low considering it's a 4 speed. My auto got 35 - 36. I'm assuming it's because of the tps and running rich. Maybe these different injectors will help.

              • That's very strange. I've run a Festiva with no TPS at all and it was fine with it.

I'm getting 37-38mpg with mine. This is a strange situation. Very strange.

                • Mine backfires if the VAF is set to loose and the exhaust has a leak. Course if the VAF is set loose it gives more fuel in ALL throttle positions.
I get that kind of gas mileage at 4 - 5 thousand feet elevation with a Honda Rincon on the trailer, 15 gallons of water, 2 propane cans, the wood stove, the BBQ, the Elk tent, my cot and gear and 2 jerry cans of fuel, chain saw, oil, chains, ropes, winch, 5 racks of nectar, a few ice chests of food and a 1/2 ton of stuff my wife thinks I will die if I leave behind..

                  • Well I've got a few updates now. I babied the car as much as I could, hardly ever going over 3k rpm. Ended up getting 38.7 mpg with the 4-speed. I was pretty pleased. But then I did the same thing with the next tank and got 30 ish. The only difference was I let the car run for 10 minutes one morning because it was really cold. However, I do believe that since my daily drive is only 6 miles one way and takes less than 10 minutes, the Festiva doesn't completely warm up. The tank before this where I got over 38 was more long distance trips. Does that seem like a reasonable explanation? I'm not sure what else it could be.

I pushed the car hard the other day and noticed that after 4500rpm, it feels like the car is losing quite a bit of power. I'm guessing that's because the 1.3L head is restrictive. I've got great low end torque and it feels pretty peppy with low rpm but the high end is suffering quite a bit.

I'm really interested in getting a B6D swap next spring. I'd love to do a B6T but that's far beyond my level of skill. So, I'm going start saving money for buying a donor capri. There's a running B6D Capri close by me for $400. Take the engine and part the rest of the car out to get the money back. I doubt that it'll be there in April, but there's quite a few of them around me for a reasonable price. A BP would be nice but they are near impossible to find around here.

                    • I was kind of afraid the head wouldn't flow enough. That's too bad.

You might have luck finding a B8 instead of a BP. They came in the SOHC Proteges. Still plenty of grunt.

                      • There's a few at the local junkyard, not sure if the engines are good, but Capris are all over the place. I'd prefer to get an entire donor car to make my money back. Just buying the B8 from the yard would be nearly as much as a donor capri.

Doesn't the B6D have more hp? 107 compared to the B8's 103. Though the B8 has more torque. If I could find an entire car for cheap then I would gladly consider the B8 but early year protege's that aren't in yards for reasonable prices are few and far between. At least from what I've seen. Staying SOHC would be nice, though. Less complicated.

                          • Yeah, 4 less HP. I'm SOHC biased. Pretty sure I'm the only one here though.

Did you pull it yourself? The yard that has the b8's doesn't allow people to pull the engine themselves. I'm assuming insurance purposes, and to make more money. I'd need to find out about that.

I'm with you on that. At least for ease of installation. The less complicated, the better, I'd say.
