  • easiest install? tranny then engine or both together?

I am ready to transplant my rebuilt B6 and tranny. I took off the short half shaft to get the whole thing out of the old car in one piece. What is the best way to put it back? With the long halfshaft, engine and tranny? Or, can I put the tranny in first and then slip the engine in and mate it to the transmission? Is there room to do this? Any preferences? Any comments will be appreciated before I rent the hoist for a second time. Thanks.

Sounds like your keeping one of the shafts installed so the spider gears won't fall. This makes things a bit harder, preferably you'd want just the shaft end from a scrap shaft installed in the trans for this purpose. I had this problem once, no stub shaft to hold the gears in place. I slid the trans with the short shaft in first then bolted the engine to the trans then rehooked it all up and then set it in its place on the mounts.

I've had my engine/transmission out three times now and I've never left the axles in. No problems so far. It seems wierd that mazda would make a transmission that can't be handled without an axle in. What do they do during assembly?

They insert the axle plug same as it says in the repair manual.

I dunno about a B6, but if it's the same length as a B3 I've done it twice in the past few weeks (leaving the trans in place). Do it with the crank pulley and the alternator off - much, MUCH easier without those.

I have always done both together, its alot of work having to line them both up perfectly in a cramped engine bay in which the engine didnt originally come in.

I left the long passenger side axle in mine when I pulled out the B3, and put it back in with the BP, no real problems, but it was very tight.

When I did my swap to a B6, I pulled both out and installed both together. I used cut up broomhandle pieces in the tranny CV holes.

                          Anyway.
Do any of y'all have tips for installing a B3 into the car with the manual tranny still in place?
I have the crank pulley off and alternator out. Just seeing if there are any tips for getting the clutch and output shaft to line up while I wait on assistant hands.

Put the transmission in 4th or 5th gear, raise one front wheel off the ground. Make sure the other wheel is still on the ground. When you get the engine in position to slide onto the transmission, turn the jacked up wheel back and forth a little to help get the splines on the transmission lined up with the splines on the clutch disc. I assume if you had the clutch off that you aligned the disc with the pilot bearing before you tightened the pressure plate to the flywheel.
                            You gonna race that thing?
