  • Setting ignition timing

I just got my new B6D running, and I have some questions about setting the timing. I am using all festiva electronics, and distributor, with a 91 capri engine.

With a timing light, when I set the timing to a degree before TDC, the engine runs fine. When I advance the timing, it seems to idle smoother, all the way to ~20 degrees BTDC. The book states 2 degrees for the NA and 10 degrees for turbo. Should I set it to idle smooth, or should I set it to 2 degrees?

Another question. Is the notch cut in the pulley the TDC mark or the 10ATDC mark? The book mentions both, and the car seems to run a lot better with the mark closer to TDC than the 10 degree marks on the cover.

the notch is TDC...as far as timing i would do whatever sounds right....advance it alittle bit.

I turned it so the notch is right around TDC. It's still a bit rough so I may need to advance it some more, but that would require breaking out the file. I think I'm hearing some valve tick, but I can't be sure with the exhaust noise. I'm towing the car in to the exhaust shop and I'll do more tuning once it has an exhaust. Hopefully nothing is wrong with the engine, as I need the car to pass tech for a track day on saturday.
