  • Got My B8-ME Running in my aspire

Well after about 2 years of lurking on here and gathering parts & knowledge Ive successfully swaped a 40 000 km b8-me from a 92 protege into my 96 Aspire. Im using the Aspire starting & charging circuts and the complete protege engine harness. The wiring was extremely difficult and had I known it was going to be this difficult I would have never attempted it. Anyways, Im still in the process of doing the permanent wiring, tach, oilpress, coolant temp, ect. I hope to have a complete how to posted by the fall. here is a crappy camera phone pic of the motor in the car. [/img]

Poo i thought i was gonna be the first one to complete a b8-me in a aspire. I'm goign the same route on protege engine harness, but keep the stock harness inside the car and splice accordingly.

Wow. That looks really good in there. I noticed the rocker cover is very similar to the aus spec b5, less the mazda badge of course! Fantastic work mate.

                B8 ME Aspire

Hey thanks guys, So I guess im sort of a pioneer when it comes to aspires, Althogh yvan did the dohc but he used a standalone, Im too cheap, so far I have less than $1000 Can into this car. 500 for the car, 300 for the engine & about 150 for the clutch. I Work at a wrecking yard so ive collected alot of parts along the way, I found a nice strut tower bar in a 93 corrolla that fits nice in my car, I also have Installed an upgraded fuel pump from a BP protege and a set of 92 mx3 recaro's waiting for me (free) as soon as im done with the engine. Anyways if you guys have any questions regarding this swap feel free to ask since it is all still pretty fresh in my mind, when I get all the wiring nice & neat ill take some pics and do a writeup.

Krusty, since you work in a junk yard, have you ever seen a carbed version of the engine you put in your car?
                      You gonna race that thing?

                        Festy46,
I hope i can answer this (somewhat) correctly on behalf of Krusty.
In Australia, we have this motor (in carb and efi), badged as Ford, and bolted into the Ford Laser (Tracer i think?) 88 through to 92 or 93. I have an 86 Laser (Tracer) as a daily driver fitted with a 1.6 carb, and they are pretty much the same. It is a shame our regs are so stringent. I would have liked to have had the opportunity to fit more cc like Krusty has.

Mick, I've got one of the 1.6L 8-valve engines with a carb that I got off eBay. It's looks almost exactly like the 1.3 carbed engine. The 16-valve versions of the 1.6 and 1.8 Liter have to have oval ports to feed the 2 side by side valves. I've never seen a carbed intake to fit one of these engines with oval ports. This is what I would like to see if they exist.

                            B8 ME

Yes this swap is virtually the same as the BP (dohc), I actually used the engine harness from a 92 escort GT so that in the future if I wanted to put the BP in I would have the extra wires already there.. As for the mounts they are all stock from the aspire, the passenger side mount bracket (where the long bolt goes through) I had to elongate the hole about 1/2 " , and the transmission X- member was lowered about 3/4" inch in the front so that the back of the intake manifold wouldnt hit the firewall. I also did some creative bending and relocating of the brake proportioning valve. Other than that you use the aspire alternator, waterpump pulley and crank pulley. Unless you want to get really creative with the intake tubes you must relocate the battery. After that drill a hole in the firewall just below the the alternator ( I didnt have AC so there was already a small hole there) this is where the Escort wiring harness passes through into the Interior. Thats all of the real fabrication/physical stuff the rest is all wiring which I wont get into yet.
