  • Air Intake In!

sorry for the long post but i know to help me out you would need details.

So I was on ebay and found one of those intake adapters real cheap... so I bolted it with the gasket on the stock box to the VAF and bought a cone filter from autozone for 20 bucks, when I put it in, it was obviously too long. I knew I had to shorten the intake hose. So I went to Home Depot and bought a 2" to 2" sewer and drain hose rubber coupler fitted with 2 hose clamps.

I brought it home and fitted one end to the circular end of the VAF with some prying by a butter knife (works Great) and cut the intake hose with a sheetrock knife right after the first rib closest to the VAF. I put the other end of the coupler over the rubber hose and hose clamped it on...

I zip tied the VAF to the body and took her for a test drive. I noticed a greater throttle response... The sound afterwards was throaty. 5 minutes after I took off I noticed the engine revving more than usual so I brought it back home and checked it out.

It seemed to me like it was a vacuum problem in the intake... and the weakest link (sealing wise) was the rubber-to-rubber connection. So I went to Autozone again and got some ATV sealant and pulled the clamp off and pulled the hose out a little and beaded along the spot wear the hoses met in the end. I squished the hoses back together and put another bead down the end to seal it.

Does this sound like anything that anyone else had to do? (or the right thing to do in this situation???

I didn't shorten mine, and I have an aftermarket down tube, with the MAF, and filter barely fits inside the car :-)

Didn't hurt, you don't want un-measured air getting into the engine!
Will run like crap at best.
          Will run lean at worst!

Well if it's only a little higher, say 100-200 rpm, I'd adjust the idle down!
But, if your talking 500 rpm, I think you have another issue.
I'd have thought that a freer flowing intake might raise rpm, but then again I would have though the ECU would have controlled that, if it were properly adjusted to begin with.
How easy would it be to temporally reattach the OEM VAF?
Just to check that the idle is correct.

the OEM VAF is on it now its just the adapter on that and the filter off of that. Is there a way to adjust the idle down on an EFI engine? I was also wondering if I had to disconnect the ground and reconnect it to reset the ECU and maybe it would readjust the settings???

Yes, see ford or Haynes manual, but adjuster is, IIRC, under a black rubber cover on the right side of the air throttle intake. Specifics to adjustment are in manuals, which I don't have with me!

Hey, anyone, can you post the idle adjustment procedure!

Might no hurt, disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery is relatively easy and quick. I'd try it!

^^after your high-flow filter is installed you NEED to reset the ECU in order to get a proper idle. leave the neg cable off the battery for a while and put it back on, fire her up and let it idle for like 5 mins. you will hear the car idle up/down a little and then even off as teh ECU is reset.

you shouldn't have to adjust your idle.
