  • 5 point racing harness installed!

A good Autocross friend had an extra 5 point, it is out of date for tech for road racing, but it doesn't matter for autocross..

It is a wrap around style for the shoulder straps, so I installed a cross bar on the B pillar. I will incorporate this into my cage when I get that far, but for now, it actually stiffens the car a bit, as well as giving a great anchor point for the harness.

The top of the side bars are bolted into the lower of the stock seat belt mounting optional holes.. the bottom is tack welded for now, and I will through bolt the B pillar at some point, for extra strength.

Everybody tells me that a harness is going to really help me shave some seconds off my times... since once you cinch yourself in, you don't have to use the steering wheel to hold onto.. I can't wait to find out!

Looks great! I'm sure that bar will prove quite functional for stiffness... not that your car of all festivas needs more suspension goodies lol.

                        I like!!

i've been looking around for sport seats, i really want a pair (or even just one for the driver)... but they are rather $$! I need to find some used, and then maybe look into getting a harness as well. One of my friends has a 4 point harness and instead of being roll-bar mounted the straps go down the back of the seat and strap to the floor pan where the rear of the seat bolts. Seems like our solution is probobly a little better, but its an option for folks who don't want the extra roll bar (makes it a little hard for passengers to get in and out!)

DONT EVER mount the belts to the floor, if you get in a crash they will break your back. it will compress your spine and really screw it up... just thought you should know

^^ i knew there was probobly a reason most folks didn't mount them to the floor...

i think i'll pass that bit of info along to the guy i know who's car is that way (he just bought it).

I've seen a diagram before of the proper angles for racing harness mounting, though it was perhaps circa 1980 or so. Some of the "safety science" may have changed since then. I recall that the shoulder belts can be lower than the shoulders, but not by more than 8-10" or so at the most.

Anyone have a link to harness mounting?

                              Ah, here we go:

And some more insight from an RX7 guy:

                              RX-7 racing harness installation instructions.

Schroth Racing's harnesses are supposedly "DOT certified" for use, but go see their NHTSA letter and decide for yourself:

                              The letter:

                              And other installation documents:

Maybe someone has more or other info!
