  • Side Molding Removal Tips?

Okay, so figured out that most of the side molding pieces on the new one need to be re-glued. Except for the short pieces on the front fenders, all were either gone, or loose enough they need to be re-applied. Going to be painting shortly, so I just pulled them all off. Anyone have any tips/tricks to getting the glue off the car. The top/bottom foamy pieces are cake, it's the big spooge of glue down the center that's kicking my butt right now. And ideas? That won't do too much damage to the car itself. Thanks in advance.

I took an old credit card and sharpened the edge by rubbing it on the garage floor, then used it like a knife to slice the glue off (in a sawing motion while pulling up the free edge of glue with my other hand). It worked well enough to where I just had a little residue left and then used pb blaster and a rag to rub the rest off

I Just removed mine. Used Body trim adhesive remover and a piece of nylon like material for a scraper. The adhesive remover contains Xylene. Best use it outdoors. Goo Gone probably just as good. I first started with a metal putty knife. Trust me. DON'T use a metal blade. I made a mess of the paint and primer on the left door. Added more work. Patience, patience, patience.

Yeah don't use a blade. I forked up my paint with gouges too. IDK why I didn't think to use WD-40 + elbow grease + nylon scraper, which removes glue.

Not overly worried about a little paint scuffage, as she'll be getting the rustoleum paint job if it ever quits raining. Been thinking I may just leave it alone anyway. Figure on putting the trim pieces back on when she's done. Just figured if that glue was easily removable, I'd go without the trim for a bit, just to see if I liked the no-trim look better. May hit it with some goo-gone, and a scraper tomorrow, and see what happens.

I think the trim-free look depends both on personal taste and the color of the car. My dark blue one is going to get a silver pinstripe. To put trim on it will clutter up the looks, to me.

I'm thinking about using JB Weld to attach a chain-saw blade the full length of the car. Parking lot carelessness ticks me off. Oh Oh, I've just exposed my passive-aggressive tendencies.

The only reaon i said to take a blade to it is because he said it was going to be painted...

I have a rubber eraser wheel off of the mac tool truck that removes all of that junk glue with no chemicals needed at all.

Mine, at most, is only going to have the door trims, and the hockey stick decal, the way it came from the factory. Think I'm going to leave the glue alone, and just put the trim pieces back on after paint.

Right you are sir, it'll have to come off one way or the other. And no, I don't have access to a compressor. Just have to do it the slow way. Been hitting it with pb since yesterday, and it is getting somewhat easier to get off.

I've used the destriping/eraser wheel too; worked well on some things like the dealer logo on the rear hatch, and some of the pinstriping. But there was a big piece of striping above the rubber door guard that the wheel wouldn't get all the glue off. I shoulda used PB or WD-40 to finish the job, but used a razor blade instead, which I regretted.

Whats the name of this tool? Is it just something that attaches to a grinder? Can you get it at your local autoparts store?
