  • Gas Door Popper

Hey, so my girlfriend came to me yesterday and said that she hates having to always put her key in her gas door because the twisting and pulling motion makes it fell as if the key is going to break off. (the key actually did break off once on an older festiva). My question to all of the Festiva brainiacs is would it be possible to create a gas door popper, and if so, what would be involved?

Another idea that I had would be to take the gas door and remove the key part and make a way that all you do is push on it to open it. What does everyone think about this? If we can come up with some ideas, I am more than willing to give it all a try. Thanks!

I think Festiva GTX did this using a 323 latch. I think a few other cars have similar latches. I would love to do this mod and would love to see a writeup. But I bet its not that hard once you see how it comes out of another car.

Mine doesn't have the key thing in the lid so I just put my finger in the hole and pull it open. Lol

            Tib popper

I pulled a Tib popper assembly for the floor to the left of the drivers seat.
I won't put this in until the end of the year. It is very simple, once you see how it comes out. Just a cable and a latch. Let me know if you want to see a picture.

I will if I ever get it installed.

As was previously stated the 323 manual release levers for both gas door and hatch have been installed.
I'll see if I can find the post, it is some years old, but did have pics.
It really isn't that hard as the lever assembly is a direct bolt in.
The threaded bolt hole already exists near the front left drivers side seat mount.
The hardest part is drilling the hole for the release in the gas cap recess and locking down the sheathed cable containing the release wire after running it to the required locations under the carpet and interior panels.

Don't see why not, same type mechanism, but the mount assembly might not be the perfect fit the 323 is but should be very close and with minor modding should fit and work.

Until you can actually get an alternative solution figured out, I would recommend this as well. When I got my Festiva, the gas door was unlocked because the thing was pretty much made of rust and had completely seized. I tried to turn it, and did bend the key quite badly.

I sprayed it with a bunch of PB Blaster, and it has been working perfectly for the past 6 months.

i would just take apart the lock from the inside of the gas flap. you will still have the key lock on the outside covering the hole but it will just flap open when you push it. thats how mine is exept i didnt have to take it apart, it just rusted away.

I think the door latch from a Pro Stock car would work nicely. It's a thumb push latch. should be pretty trick.

I doubt you would have any by you since they were only sold overseas
