  • Battery Relocation Help!

So this Friday I am going to relocate the battery to the trunk because the bp swap takes up too much of the under the hood space. I went to Princess Auto and bought 15' of 0 gauge wire, some battery clamps and split loom to protect it. The real question I have is the following:
Can an acid battery LEGALLY be mounted in the trunk of a car in BC, Canada?
If Yes, does it have to be in a sealed box?

thats what alot of people use but sometimes its more cause they use oil and water proof coating... it costs alot to make then...

one of your wires is a 2 guage wire and the other is a 4ga wire that supply power to the whole car.
Not sure on the BC rulings but you should have a vented box reguardless.

k, ya I believe what I picked up is welding wire, I got 15' of 0 gauge for around $35 (got to love the discount).
I was looking into the NHRA racing rules, and they state that you can have an acid battery, but it needs to be in a sealed 'aluminum or polyurethane' box. So I guess my tupperware box idea won't work, but I can always go out and but some aluminum.

                          Sounds good! lol,
So I went to canadian tire and picked up a marine battery box which will work perfectly. The only problem is that it is not at all air tight. I need to find a way to make it air tight (maybe fiberglassing) Sasquatch if you get any ideas let me know.

What you need to define is the term "sealed" - Airtight is not sealed - sealed just means that if it were to leak its contained - unless in BC they require you to vent to the outside of the car - in that case then it would need to be air tight aside from the vent to the outside.

You never want to completely seal off a battery - your just asking for trouble - Acid batteries let off gasses during cycling and charging and there for need venting - ie: if you dont let the gas out it becomes a pressure bomb

looking at the NHRA rules for racing, this is what it says,
"battery may be located in a sealed .024-inch-steel, .032-inch-aluminum, or NHRA-accepted poly box. If sealed box is used in lieu of rear firewall, box may not be used to secure battery and must be vented outside of body."

So the box would need to be air tight I believe. It wouldn't be a good idea to just let the battery vent into the car
