  • Floor Insulation Padding Stuff

Landlord of mine dropped off some 1/4" floor padding that was leftover from doing his house and I figured I would try and add some insulating to my Festiva. So far I have only done the floor but may do the doors, hatch and rear wheel wells to reduce road noise.

Got a little too dark and mosquito-ee to continue. Grainy photos compliments of low light/lack of flash and iPhone.

Yeah, it doesn't have a flash so most low light pictures are no good.

before you install carpet, you need to adhere the foam to the car, it won't work at it's best unless it's attached. i like using 3M spray90. little expensive but it holds up really well. also, since you'll be at you're local McDepot, grab a few cans of high expantion spray foam filler; lighter than the floor foam, and does just as good of a job in the tight places.

Funny you say that. My Dad just went through three new phones because all of his pictures were blurry. He didn't peel off the plastic! Good call.

On subject, I hope that padding works well! Get up on the firewall too, that's where I'd imagine a lot of vibrations coming in from the engine compartment and front suspension.

                  wet

Just remember not to get any water under your carpet and get the underlay wet. That's the fastest way to rust through a body.

Manufacturers hate when you buy a new car and take out all the carpeting.
It adds about and extra 10 years to the life of a vehicle, now that the water can evaporate.

I plan on having rubber floormats. This is in my "swap car to be", so it will likely not be driven in the winter.

maybe a layer of plastic before the carpet goes in? Tyvek comes to mind. One big piece, a razor and some spray glue would do it.

Really good ideas, and they remind me that the right front passenger floor board probably has some rust that needs to be repaired. And the cause of it located and repaired too.

What type of carpet backing is that? It's hard to tell in the pics. Is is foam, or fabric (jute)?
If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.

the cause is there are holes in the floor boards (for dainage?) water comes in soaks the padding, the padding stays wet and rusts the metal. Terrible design, I caulked about 4 or 6 holes when I pulled my carpet. Holes that were designed to be there for whatever reason.
