  • upgrade lighter and defrost fuse?

First of all, my rear defrost doesn't work... Second, my heater doesn't work worth a crap.... Which leads me to my question:

I want to wire in one of the lighter plug-type defrosters into the rear defrost wiring. The problem is, it only has a 15amp fuse in the fuse box. The defroster is rated at 16, and says to plug it into a socket rated at 20.

Also, I want to put one in the front, and wire it into the lighter socket. (it doesn't have to be hard wired in, I am fine with pulling the plug out when I'm done with it) Once again, it has a 15amp fuse in the fuse box, and the defroster is rated at 16, and says to plug it into a socket rated at 20.

Would it be safe to just put in a higher rated fuse, or will I need to run a new wire and use a relay of some sort to activate it? Thanks

Wait for more answers, but I would think you should be OK. Wiring is NOT my forte, though...

I would run a new switched line from the battery. Have you ever looked at what gauge wiring the stock lighter has? Maybe 20g. Not really what you want to be pulling near max amps through
It's a good thing you don't read the stickies, you might of learned something.Poverty produces creativity

I could really be wrong here, but going from memory, all the wiring appears to be pretty much the same gauge. I would THINK going from 15 A to 20A wouldn't be a problem, but I can't be sure.... Not sure enough to tell another it is safe, but I would just do it...
