  • Battery box options.

Okay, I've come to the conclusion that $80 for a freaking sealed battery box is ridiculous. Anyone have any ideas about a good sealed battery box? I don't care if it's NHRA legal or not, I just care about hydrogen not entering the inside of my car. I'm thinking of using an old military ammo box because they are sealed, just drilling holes for the cables and tube and sealing it back up. What do you guys think?

That or use a sealed Optima type battery. The battery in an Olds Aurora is a bit big, but it's under the rear seat and has a built in vent tube system.

I think that's dangerous to have a sealed box, no? Especially when you have a pressurized container filled with a flammable gas?

I might be exaggerating... I don't think I've seen them for sale though; not fully sealed ones at least.

They have a vent tube that you drill a hole in the floor for.

Yeah but the Optima is $170. I don't have $170. In fact I'm finishing this car on the pennies that I have left, lol.

Miata gel batteries. Don't need to vent.

I had the same problem as you and ended up forking over the $100 but that was before I knew that the Pick-N-Pull sold batteries with a vent for $25!! And they have a 6 month warranty.

Do you have an Optima? Because those are fine, they don't vent.

I had a factory size standard festy batt in my plastic box for over a year before I got the optima. I never could smell the batt or anything. Unless u have a crappy old corroded batt that leaks acid then I honestly wouldint worry about the fumes.

It's not the H2SO4 you gotta worry about. In an overcharge situation batteries naturally vent a fair amount of pure hydrogen gas, and pure oxygen gas.
Now, explosions are cool and all, but not when it's inside a car. Especially when there's someone inside said car.
