  • Rotozip for interior metal cutting?

Soon I should be cutting out my rear seat supports in Aqua. In reading Cris Rummel's pictorial on his B6T swap, he says he used a Rotozip to cut off the windshield washer bottle neck support bracket under the hood.

(FYI, after I cut out the supports, I will probably be covering the cut areas with either paneling, sheeting of some kind, or pickup bed liner stuff. I can pound down the leftover metal areas that stick up, so a perfectly flush cut won't be necessary.)

Would this tool be good for cutting out the seat supports, too? Are there many versions of the Rotozip, and if so, which should I get?

I just don't think my 10 amp Dewalt recip saw would be best for cutting out the supports.

Ideas? How have you all cut out your supports?

    Thanks,

    Karl

Use a spot weld drill bit. Only partially drill through the spot weld on the support and definitely not through the body. Then gently chisel (with a small chisel) whatever is left that is still holding. Then grind the remaining surface smooth. No butchery. A professional job.

Spot weld drills come in 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" depending on the size of the spot weld.

Agreed, that would be the cleanest way of doing it. I cut mine out a couple weekends ago, used a cut off wheel and air hammer, not the cleanest way but it's fast, I'm going to be doing some welding back there anyway. So for me it's no big deal to weld up some small holes left from where some of the spot welds ripped out.

Thanks guys, for those better ideas. I'll check out Harbor Freight and some other stores for "drilling out" tools.

          This is the one I have used;

Free Shipping - Blair Equipment Spot Weld Cutter Kits with qualifying orders of $109. Shop Spot Weld Cutting Tools at Summit Racing.

Though I didn't buy it from Summit. Check with an auto body supply shop. More than likely they sell the Blair brand.

The pin at the end retracts into the "hole saw" shank. Plus the blade is double ended so you have a spare.

Granted I don't use mine everyday, but I've used it on quite a few projects and I haven't had to switch out the blade yet.

          Hope this helps.

Thanks Less. I went to HF today but couldn't find any tools for this. I'm in no big hurry though.

                That would be nice Michael!

Don't know when I may be cutting though. It's supposed to rain for the next couple days. I really want to (mostly) finish Aqua's interior before the May 28th meet.
