    I used to do rustoleum when i was a teenager when I couldnt afford to pay for a paint job. All you need is a cheap spray gun from harbor freight as someone else suggested to use. Just thin it out the paint with mineral spirits a bit and it will come out great. i just did my truck undercarriage and frame last summer with rustoleum gloss black. Its still shines under the truck after a year

      I rolled mine on super light then did the next coats with a big lots sprayer. I thought it was a great 20 footer, and mine was red too. I hate red. Prep is everything, good tape jobs, and do the little things on reassembly, like addressing the side mouldings and trim, make them black again. Car will pop nice.

        On the rustoleum it says to thin with acetone and not thinner. I listened.

          In the next 2-3 weeks im painting my car, i have a spray gun from harbor freight, but i dont know what types of primer/paint/clearcoat to use, and ive heard rumors that you can or cant use certain types of paint with certain guns or tips, so any info you guys post will be a big help. I just want it like a semi shiny black color, i was thinking maybe satin black with gloss clearcoat? Honestly i dont know the first thing about any paint tho.

          I'd like to keep the budget for paint around 100$, but if its a little more i could deal with it. My clearcoat is chipping off, and my car literally looks like $hit right now. It will be all rusted by next summer, the paint is comming off and rust starting to show thru in some spots, ive got plenty of "prep" work to do before i can even paint. The chrome pieces by the windows are covered by some type of black stuff that is chipping too and i dont know what to do about them, how to take them off, or if i can even find new ones if i wanted to.

            unless you are laid off, or unemplyed, i wouldnt wasted your time with rustoeleum. just go buy a single stage paint for $100. rolling rustoleum takes forever and it doesnt look good. spraying rustoleum looks better but it takes TONS of thin coats in order to lay it flat and not get orange peel, sags, or drips. plus you have to wait a day before you can wetsand and spray the next coat on. here are some cars i spray with rustoleum. each one took anywhere from 4 days to 8 days.

                Did a car with tremcald (Canadian equivalent) Wouldn't do it again. After two years it really faded and the surface was really oxidized because of the lack of clear coat

                  I rolled my girlfriends old Mazda 323 Hatchback. Not too pretty, but it was much better than before. A good 20 footer.

                      Ghost great job on your sprayed on Rustoleum. I might compromise and spray it on and keep wetsanding and buffing. I am taking a week off at the end of October and can't wait to get this started. Thanks everybody for all your insight and experiences with this roller method.

                        rustoleum wont buff for crap. it never really cures. your best chance is to wait until next summer to buff it after it has been sitting in the sun for awhile. wetsand your 2nd to last coat really well and then spray your last coat and and leave it like that. thats your best chance for a decent gloss

                          that's always been the problem with most alkyd enamels. Adding a hardener to it will dramatically improve the sandability and gloss. Tractor Supply sells one made by Valspar;

                          I've used it with Valspar's tractor paints, which are very similar to Rustoleum enamels.

                            that will also speed up the drying time so it wont take as long
