My custom race doors

Well work was slow today and i decided to take advantage and cut some more body fat off of the 'ol festiva. Wieghed myself with the door on a scale before the procedures 203 with my body weight 153. Door weighed roughly 50. After cutting out the crush beam, take out the glass regulator and cutting the metal behind it. 185 per door. A weight reduction of 18 per door...alot of work involved though.

Can you elaborate more? Are you going to be using windows at all? Did you just cut the door supports out on the inside and take out the window tracks and mechanisms? -Kyle

i think have have some more pics of them somewhere but basically i drilled out 17 or so resistance welds that holds the "crush beams" on the inside of the door. I left in the window tracks, for i am going to put a piece of plexi in there; probably smoke tinted. Took out the whole regulator assembly and cut out basically the whole inner skin and cut a piece of alluminum to the specs of the door panel and screwed it in all the way around. Doors weigh in at here let me weight them again.......

3 minutes later with me on scale...184 with the modded door
204 with stock door

i weigh 154 that is a 40lb savings in weight

That's cool if only I could do that for the classification of my car for AutoX I'd def. do it... I've been wanting to put all lexan windows except for the windshield. It would help CG and roll center ALOT our cars probably have 200lbs or so of glass. Just class rules don't allow me to. Also they don't allow you to take out any interior so I guess when I'm ready to move up a class I'll have to revisit this thread. Good work man! -Kyle

i seriously hope this is a track only car.... because the festy is death trap enough without having paper thin doors with no crush beams...

Who knows maybe he's putting in a cage with door bars.. That could be cool.

this will be an autoX car. If you did this mod on any car it would make it a deathtrap from a side impacted crash..... but the crush beam is only 2 layers of 12 gauge or so metal in any car not much support anyway.

Just a good mod to do for a track car that does not what to lose any chassis rigidify

off the topic but what is the lightest festiva out there with weight slips from a scale at a recycling yard? Anyone? I'm thinking if i drop the interior, my door mods, no cage, remove bumper supports, section in aluminum floor where tire well is plexi all the windows. With those mods and a 10 lighter B6 engine what do you think it would come out to?
