I installed one of the struts and decided that it was more than adequate on its own. I gave the other one to my dad for his Festiva . Here is a pic of mine installed. One alone won't raise it by itself but it will hold it in about any position past quarter of the way open. One thing I love is that the strut brings the hood up tight to the latch when you pop it, as opposed to having to squeak your fingers in the tiny little crease to make that space.

I recommend redundancy. Just in case one fails, you won't end up with broken fingers, or a big bump on your head.

I noticed the duct tape over the cowl intake, cowl rusted out and leaking?

Yes. Although it lies below the boundary layer of air flow on the hood, cowl seals have a slight effect on airflow into the grill opening.

So do you need 4 ball studs for 2 struts, or just two? because it it really looks like you need 4.

Yep. You definitely need 4 if you Install struts on both sides.

I assume these are the correct ball studs?

I did 2 struts a while back and LOVE IT. Sometimes I will open my hood just because it is cool to do so now. lol

I noticed that even with two hood struts, the hood goes up much slower in cold weather. I really appreciate the fact that both prop rod clips were able to be removed and that I was able to use one of the holes to mount the cruise vacuum ball. It is perfectly located.

Yeah, that is why I need to get a new one for my hatch. I noticed it last winter, but now that I also have the wiper motor in there now in this cold weather the hatch falls unless the strut is fully extended.
But even when warm out, it wouldn't fully open, I would have to assist it the last few inches.

Luckily I can have autozone order one for $12
