  • Cowl Hood

I was talking to the Honda guys down the street tonight and told them about my cooling issues I'm having. What they do is make their hood a cowl hood by spacing it up in the back. Their hinges bolt to the bottom of the hood and they just put some spacers and longer bolts in. This allows the engine heat a place to escape.

Tomorrow I'll fab up some 1" plates to raise my hood. I'll also remove the rubber gasket along the back of the engine compartment. We'll see if this relieves some of the under hood heat.

    Pics to follow tomorrow.

Have you tried blocking off the airflow above and below the radiator? If you can prevent air from getting into the engine bay except through the radiator it will increase cooling.

in the 70s i had seen people with the back of the hood raised up to make a poor mans cowl induction. i do not know how they did it but it was a short fad.

I made the spacers today at work and will put them on tonight. If it helps the cooling then I'll find another hood and modify it.

Cut some vents into the back of the hood like on Roger's car (FMS).

Definetly not the final product. If it works out I'll either put some vents or louvers in the rear or make an actual cowl hood.

Don't worry it will look good in the long run.

This weekend I'll be modifying the bumper and support to allow airflow to the radiator.

American cars use to be hung up on wide open front ends but the corvette had a small nose and that should be where we should focus this for a fix.

In tech school I had a 302 ranger and it was lowered. I took the rubber piece off cause it would scrape everything. The truck had a stock radiator and would run 200-205 and it was july. After removing the 4" X 30" piece under the truck it would hot on the highway. I bought a bigger radiator. it helped but I didnt understand about why It changed so much removing the part. A shop teacher told me that that part stops the air from going under the car and hot air from the radiator had a place to leave the engine bay. Removing that piece had it harder for air to leave the engine bay.

Also a import shop where I use to fill my nos bottle had a customers car (98 eclipse gst) that had a scoope that dipped in the front part of the hood. the shopped opened in up and made a tray that made the air leave that way. A week later I went back to fill the bottle and asked them how did it turn out and they said his heat up problem was fixed. Turns out at the local track he was pulling 225 at the end of the track and with this he claimed it was down to a livable 210.

I think the (curb scraper) would help and putting panels in front of the grill opening to seal it up would help. Or you could go fast and furious and cut vent holes in the hood but dont forget you will need a deflector to so the fresh air over the hood doesnt block the escape.
