  • Intermitent Wipers wanted!

Been looking thru threads on someone who found and installed intermittent wipers in the Festive.
    Anyone know what works?
    Really appreciate some help.

Late 80s Mazda 626s have variable intermittent wipers, you can remove the whole steering column switch assembly and install in on the Festiva, or just remove the switch and stalk and swap it over to your stock assembly. You will have a useless cruise control switch on the end of the stalk though, but it has never bothered me.

Or 80s LX model Festivas had a non-variable intermittent wiper switch.

^Yep that's what I have always used. The cruise button can be wired to a relay that can then control ANY extra function you may want. Like a semi horn

They also come in the late-80s 323 LX. Non-LX got the one-speed intermittent.

Tou want to get the stalk with the varaible speed intermittent ring.
I sold the one in the picture because it did not have a cruise switch.

There is one on the 88 Tracer at LKQ. It has cruise control too. It's variable intermittent.
Lettering is orange. I would get it for one of mine if the lettering was white.

              SOOOOO, it's a "plug-n-play thing or what?
Someone please furnish more detail about this so I can go to the salvage yard and get what I need.
I will settle for a single speed intermittent, W/ or WO the cruise switch.
Thanks for the feedback so far. No intermittent drives me bonkers.
              I've got a '93 GL
Thank you for all the help.

On my '90 L+Plus in light rain I just push the wiper switch toward the dash and it gives one sweep, keeps sweeping if I hold it. Easy to do every 10 or 30 seconds, whatever. It's right at my fingertips, not really any inconvenience.

Yes... I have intermittent on my 89 and it was just pull the steering wheel, remove the plastic shroud, loosen the clamp ring disconnect the wires and pull the old one
off. *Note. Be careful when you try to pull the old switch off the steering colum.. there is a little plastic tab that you have to press down to get it off.
First one I removed...I broke the tab. Then slide the new one on, tighten the clamp ring and connect the wires. Replace the plastic shrouding and the steering wheel.
That's all there is to it. The intermittent multiswitch on my 89 does not have the cruise control though.

I have not changed one on a 93GL, but I assume they are the same. Someone who has change on a 93GL might chime in.

                    Same.

You can change the wiper switch without pulling the steering wheel. Remove the column covers. It's tight in there, but can be done easily enough.

                        Welcome!

BTW, I mean the switch only. Not the whole assm. Just need the stalk and the elect switch. Pull out old switch and stalk, snap in the intermittent switch and stalk. Done!

I think you need one of those "bent" screwdrivers to reach the screws too.

This is awesome to know. Kinda sucks not having different speeds. I will be hunting a switch down & throw it in when i throw in my tach cluster i bought . I have the original cluster WO/tach & it has the classic festiva speed twitch

Speed twitch? The speedo cable probably has a kink in it. Grease it when you change the speedo, it may help, but from my experience, if it has a kink, it will wear and break eventually. Might want to get another speedo cable, and be careful when you change to the tach speedo. You have to get the cable to the right hand side of the steering column to hook up the tach, and if you bend the cable, it will get a kink in it

Twitches, it doesn't stay at an exact speed. I did look for kinks in the engine but cant see whats inside the dash until i rip it apart. I came across a speedo cable on rock auto. I was told to grease the cable where it connects to the cluster. What kind of grease is suggested for that? Thanks for the tips guy
