  • Control arm bolt keeps backing off causing swerving.

The captured bolt broke out of its cage on the passenger side of my Festiva, so I replaced it with a flange nut with a washer. Now I have a problem: every once and a while I have to tighten up the bolt again. Is there any way to prevent this? It's getting quite annoying not having consistent handling properties.

    Maybe some Loctite?

    More torque when tightening?

You are using proper hardened steel bolt and nuts, right? (Grade 10.8 or over, I think.)

did you use a lockwasher? needs to be a lockwasher and it helps to have the flanged nut to have the serations on the mating surface to lock into the washer as well. no locktite should be needed.

no, didn't use a lockwasher, I'll try that next. The flanged nut has the serrations on it and it's a 10.8 grade nut.

^ yeah, needs a lock washer. also use a lock washer on the top of the bolt as well if you can.

Should I put a lock washer under the nut head or the bolt head?

BOTH if you can. more important is a lockwasher at the NUT though.
