  • PLEASE help!?! coilover/suspension question

so today i went to pick up my new tires. 14x6" konig vipers (4x4.5), with 175/65 rubber. wheels fit nicely. however, the tires, not so much. the problem was clearing the rear spring perch.
    so the question
i have recently searched the heck out of this forum trying to find a thread that I've commented on before, that involved using the spring seats of a coilover set from ebay for a civic, and had a link to a site where you could buy a variety of springs in 2.5" diameter. i'm too cheap to do the "advanced suspension mods". i've got brand new gabriels on all four corners, and was looking to grab some of those cheap civic spring seats, toss those springs, and grab some springs that are (just a tad) stiffer in the rear. if someone could find that thread and link me, that would help a lot. if not, if someone could link me to a site i could get the springs from, i can get the seats and all for them. i'm just looking for a 2.5" spring that will fit those civic perches, that are a tad stiffer in the front, and a wee bit more stiffer in the rear.
i know i know, search button. i've used it. all i come up with is the advanced mods, and a jumbled mess of sorts.
if it's any help, i reordered my original wheel set up of 14x6" american racing Estrella with +35 offset (that i had previously sold on here) with 185/55/14 rubber. that set up fit my stock suspension perfectly, with no mods at all. however, they only come in summer tires, so i'll have to have the civic spring perch set up, or something similar to be able to clear winter tires while in canada (i'm definitely not trying to ride on snow and ice with a summer set up)
any help would be much appreciated dudes!

Glad I could help. I used that link along with Advancedynamics thread to build mine.
With 185-60-14 Escort LX wheels on my 90L, I had to trim the rear spring perches with a cutoff wheel for clearance.

I used 175 on the front and 125 on the rear with KYB Rio struts and mounts up front and KYB festiva struts in the rear.
Car is still in process of assembly so I haven't got to try it out yet.

That is a really cool link, I have a subscription to it.

You know, you could put some spacers in the back, and also clear the spring perch. If. You. Wanted.

Problem im having is this. If I do the spacers, sans screw in lug studd it would be quite the oain in the arse to mount them because I've still got the screw in lug bolts. They're the bmw kind that are longer so I could do the spacers, but like I said, pain. Second problem would be the rear compression. With a spacer I'm afraid of rubbing the outside of the wheel against the back quarter panel. Since I've never rolled or hammered the fenders i wouldn't know where to start as far as that goes.

                    1. Get studs. Lug bolts are just stupid. If you get the long studs, you can then use spacers no prob.
                    2. Your winter tires will be 155/80x13, I'm guessing. They should clear the spring perch fine, since they are so skinny.

Rio Front and Festiva Rear was exactly what I was going to do. But now they tell me the VW is a better choice. A little stiffer dampening. So I wait for your impressions of the Rio fronts.

My vw struts made by monroe have had 2 warranty's so far, the increased dampening has blown two seals around the shaft. If they didn't have such a good warranty I would try bilstein as they look good and resemble OEM , maybe better quality??

They sure work good though, I love the ride of softer longer springs and slightly more powerful shocks.

Sachs, Boge, and Bilstein are all OEM suppliers for VW. Any of those brands will offer great quality. I have 36mm Bilstein sports on my 89 auto. The valving is a little overkill for my little carby b3 though. lol.
