  • My festy with Race rubber and wheels (autocross) (56k warn)

I really need coilovers.... I do rub with these 20x8" Hoosier slicks (R45)on diamond 13x6 (3.5"bs) racing wheels.

They fit really well, and I do like the way it handles..

I am going to try them out Sunday, hope they don't rub TOO much... or I will have to put the street rubber back on....

looking good, your festiva has been one of my favorite ones since joining this site. I like the slicks but one question, why slicks in the rear? good job keep it up.

Mostly because it looks silly with just slicks in the front, and slicks in the rear do help on the autocross course... although I have heard otherwise, all the FWD guys in the club run them all the way around.. not just on the front.

Hey what class are you running in? I am interested in doing some Solo II but I am not sure which class my car would be since it has a BP engine, and roll cage.

The following sentence is WRONG, please see below for correction:

With the BP it HAS to be at least D Modified, legally. However, many clubs aren't strict, and you could probably run E prepared, or Street Modified.

To the letter of the SCCA, a production based automobile, with a 2.0 liter or less engine weighing what our festys weigh (forget the exact number, and don't feel like looking it up at the moment)

WITH an engine swap that was not originally available in that car (like B6's or BP's, or ANYTHING except a B3) has to run in D Mod. The roll cage is a safety feature, and doesn't really matter from what I understand, although technically, you should have a roll cage in any modified class... this too isn't enforced on the local level, but might be on anything other than local.

I will quote the appropriate passage from the SCCA Solo II handbook to back up the classification, but not at the moment... I am trying to watch a movie with my boy...

All road race cars run 4 slicks......... I have never seen anyone not run 4 slicks.. yet. I have heard of it on FWDs , to help to get the car to rotate, but I have never seen it.

Ummm as long as it is the same production line of engines AKA Ford w/Ford or since ours is a mutt built by Mazda and Kia, any engine from any of those companies would be allowed to run in Street Modified as long as it met the weight requirement. Just like a Civic w/an Integra engine swap (pick one B18C1, C5). Weight w/a BP in a Festy would be 1875lbs w/o driver I believe. Otherwise yes, you would need to run in a prepared class. A roll cage does not boot you into any class. You can even run a roll cage in Stock classes. -Kyle

It's definitely going to rub, even at 1.7" smaller diameter that the ones I had on... a litte weird, because they are only rubbing at the top of the fenders... and the old onez hung out a bit when turning too... oh well. Guess I will have to set the car up a little higher, and I didn't want to do that...

You are right, I re-read the rules, I had misread this passage:

provided that an engine from the
desired manufacturer was a factory option in that particular
                    model

I read the words "AN ENGINE" to be "THE ENGINE" My bad.

I have a stripped interior, and that leaves me right out of Street mod.

E prepared, and D mod are the two classes I can run, if you don't have a stripped interior, add Street Mod to that list.

BUT< Street mod is WAY too high of a class for ME. I would have to run against cars in my club that are just freaking awesome.... maybe someday when my skill level and car is much better... LOL

OK, this is the passage that I midread, from the section on Street Modified:

                      D. Drivetrain and related components (induction, ignition, fuel systems,
etc.) are unrestricted except for the following limitations:
                      1. Engine block must be a production unit manufactured and
badged the same as the original standard or optional engine for
that model. Badges that exist as marketing aliases for the
manufacturer will be recognized as equivalents. Swaps
involving makes related only at a corporate level are not
recognized as equivalents. Models produced as a joint venture
between manufacturers may utilize any engine from any
partner in the joint venture, provided that an engine from the
desired manufacturer was a factory option in that particular
model (e.g. Eagle Talon available originally with either a
Mitsubishi or Chrysler engine, may use any motor from
Chrysler or Mitsubishi). This allows engine blocks
manufactured as production units for sale in other countries
                      such as Japan or Germany.

Now I am just getting confused. Because my engine was an option in any mazda/ford mutt it is allowed in street modified? Does the sentence mean as long as I dont have a mitsubushi motor in a ford right?

since ford still makes a festiva in europe, you can use any engine that are used in those models as well as those used in Japan, INCLUDING the B6 variants.

Yeah, FB is correct about using those engines, It IS Confusing, isn't it.

The thing is really this sentence, or example they listed:

Eagle Talon available originally with either a
Mitsubishi or Chrysler engine, may use any motor from
                            Chrysler or Mitsubishi

Basically, you look at the stock engine. In this case. Mazda, all the way.

                            SO, you can say....

Festiva, originally available with an engine from Mazda, may use ANY engine from Mazda.

As that is accurate, according to the example.

                            Everyone agree?

But, now you can see why the local clubs don't get too excited about classing. EXCEPT if you start being competitive, lol, then they start looking close.

YES, a NON-GUTTED Festy can run in Street mod with a BP, IF it is badged Mazda. And, if you have one badged FORD, I seriously doubt anyone could notice/care. I was classed as D mod, by a fellow that didn't recognize that Mazda made the original stock engine for Festiva. IF, I bitched, I could get put in E prepared (remember, my interior is gutted) , but there are guys there that are CREAMING me, so I am fine in D mod for now.. haha. I could slap carpet, and a couple of panels in, and run in Street Mod, and REALLY get creamed.

Since now I have slicks though, I am Prepared, or Modified.

Long story short. D mod is a fine place for my little guy, and you can run in any of the three, according to who you want to compete with.

No you can run in Street Mod with your Festiva badged as a Festiva with ANY Mazda, Kia, or Ford engine in it as long as if someone questions it you can somehow convince/prove that the Festiva really is the same car just rebadged. Which it is..

I have been questioned but they quickly were informed of the history of the Festiva and that was the end of that.
