  • 1989 L Revistited- Build Thread

As some of you guys may remember I had been working on this car before a while back, but then I built the green car instead. Now that the green one is done and on the road, this car is my next project. It's a 89' L ATX, I plan on doing a engine swap on the car, and I might also convert it over to MTX while it's all apart. Haven't decided on which engine I would go with yet, but most likely a B6-E.

    Pic of the car.

Today I stripped the whole interior except for the dash.

On the drivers side of the floor the previous owner spilled oil or something on the carpet, and it soaked through the carpet and into the insulation/coating on the floorboards. Most of the coating on the areas where it was spilled was turned into a nasty goo. I scraped all that crap off today. The floor boards are nice and solid, no rustholes only rust I found was minor surface rust in a few spots.

    Pics of the nasty goo..

And shots of the floorboards after scraping the loose stuff off, still need to vaccum the floorboards.

This is just a project to work on during my free time, don't really have a deadline but hopefully it'll be done around summer time.

I know that I wanted that torque converter that you have, any other parts you have?

                More pics of the car.

                The bad spots..

And the parts car that will help bring this one back to shape body-wise..

I had planned on making that car into a auto-x car but decided it would be best to cut back to 2 festivas (93 and the 89). That way I can take some time building this one to make it how I want to now that I have one to drive everyday.

Ah-ha! So you were hiding the bad spots in the first set of pics.
Still, fairly solid. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.

Haven't made any more progress on the car yet.. (damn weather) But I'm pretty sure I'm going to swap in a B6-E out of a 88-89 323 into the car, and maybe a aspire ATX also, and I'm going to stick with the 89' FI set up.

Todays work.. and found out I have some work ahead of me..

                        removed the bumpers today

And for the not so good stuff..

While I was removing all the side moldings from the car, when I came to the one on the drivers rear quarter and pulled it off I noticed that some of the paint came with it and then I saw bondo.. lots of bondo So I decided to see how much bondo somebody plastered on this thing and it looks like the whole drivers rear quarter is in need of alot of work to look good again. Theres a bunch of holes drilled in it and the metal is really wavvy/dented. Also found a rusthole on that side. I sure hope this is the only spot thats like this on the car!

I do however have a parts car with good patch panels that should make the repair easier, and I know a few people who could probably weld the patch panels on for me, I'll figure out something.

Would you be interested in it? I'm probably going to remove the A/C from it, Anything I don't really need on this car is going to be removed.

I see what you were talking about the other night in your PM. Looks like they tried to screw the molding piece on at one time. Crazy. Still, I have faith that you will do it justice.
