So, I've been poking around my vaf meter but now it seems that I'm running lean no matter what. It had been doing great previously. Looking to order a new fuel pressure regulator and a coolant temperature sensor from rock auto tomorrow (unless somebody nearby has them in known working condition ). Even getting them overnighted is half the cost of getting them new locally.

Woot, getting a little body work done today. I finally patched the holes in the driver side floorboard. Here's a before shot after I got it cleaned up:

        IMG_20110629_151230 by link5186, on Flickr

and an after shot with the resin drying:

        IMG_20110629_155418 by link5186, on Flickr

Patched it inside and out. Got a little carried away with the resin, but not too shabby for my first time working with fiberglass if I say so myself. I'm waiting for it to dry right now and then I'll sand it down to take off the rough bits.

So I'm selling parts from the red car to finance my next big upgrade. Going B6 so I can pull the b3 and start working on it for a snail's pace turbo build. Never drove one with a swap before, so this should be interesting. I'm pretty excited about it. Gonna be a butt busting weekend!

So yesterday I participated in a little engine pulling party at the junkyards. I picked up a b6 from an '89 Tracer with 81k miles. I got it mounted to the stand yesterday and I'll be tearing into it fairly lightly. I plan to remove the oil pan just to double check the bottom, pull the valve cover to check for any varnish and scope through the spark plug holes to get a good look at the piston tops. New rear main seal coming, too. Here's a few unloading pics just to get everyone worked up. I had just enough room to clear the hatch with my hoist:

                IMG_20110703_190015 by link5186, on Flickr

I pulled it out sideways, sat it down on a thick rubber mat and stood it up. Moved my chain to the top and took it back up:

I pulled the closeout plate and mounted it up to the engine stand and pushed everything back into the shed:

I wish I had time to crack into it today, but unfortunately family events abound. More pics and updates as soon as I get crackin! I'm excited.

Not a bad deal, $207 after tax with the vaf. I went ahead and paid for the 30 day jy warranty.

So I just scored a full engine gasket set (old oem p/n) for $33.99! Thank you ebay! Looks like I'll be tearing the head off after all. I plan on cleaning it up and cracking it open tonight. Pics to come!

Sorry guys, not posting the pics tonight. Suffice to say it has been a long evening. Got it tore down to find out I need bearings. I found out why that unwrecked tracer was in the yard: somebody botched a head gasket replacement. Coolant passages in the block were lined with some nice hard coolant additive fallout and oil crud. Somebody must have caught it since the bearings weren't awful, but the #4 main is scuffed rough and of the 2 rod caps I pulled, one bearing has a pea width divot. Haven't measured the cylinder walls yet, but they look pretty good at first glance (nearly no ridge). I'll hone the glaze off and re-ring it. Sure, I got the warranty, but this one's already torn down and I'm not just throwing it back together for store credit. That and the only other one (that I know of) there has a boat load of miles. It also helps that all the parts are cheap!

So I got the remaining gasket material removed from the top of the block, and then spent the rest of the daylight trying to clear the crud out of the coolant passages. After a good long while with a pressure washer, angled pick, and the air nozzle I finally managed to clean most of it out. I'll have to give it a flush again once it's back together. I've not yet checked the deck or head for warpage. Couldn't find the stinking strait edge. I'll be doing that tomorrow. :violent1:

So, as promised, the pics I didn't post!

I missed this one from unloading. It peed in my car!

                              IMG_20110703_192535 by link5186, on Flickr

So I borrowed the pressure washer from work and went to town with some degreaser. Here's a couple of before shots:

                              IMG_20110705_172731 by link5186, on Flickr

                              IMG_20110705_172743 by link5186, on Flickr

After giving it a cleaning that would make the devil flinch it came out like this:

                              IMG_20110705_182204 by link5186, on Flickr

Oh, that's my tabby cat in the background! I didn't realize she was poking around in that shot. Say hi! Anyway, here's a few other angles with it cleaned up:

                              IMG_20110705_182210 by link5186, on Flickr

                              IMG_20110705_182220 by link5186, on Flickr

So after that I removed both the manifolds and set them aside until later. I then pulled off the valve cover. Not terrible looking, but the oil was a bit goopy.

                              IMG_20110705_193844 by link5186, on Flickr

I then pulled the oil pan.

                              IMG_20110705_195748 by link5186, on Flickr

The muck started making me a bit nervous, so I pulled the head bolts out to find the bottom of them coated with silicone sealant. Why do people do this crap? So that's when I found out what went wrong.

                              IMG_20110705_195802 by link5186, on Flickr

I didn't get a shot of the water jackets, but they were literally about half full of hard, nasty additive fallout. I already talked about that, so moving on. here's a shot of the head:

                              IMG_20110705_195827 by link5186, on Flickr

Doesn't look bad, but I couldn't tell you if it's flat yet. The plan today is to do a whole bunch of measuring and then start shopping around for the parts I'm going to need. I'll pull the crank and pistons tonight and post some pics of the problem bearings I talked about yesterday.

So I took some measurements yesterday, but I think the digital caliper I borrowed from work is inaccurate. I'll have to find my good starrett dial caliper. Easier to center up round measurements with it anyway. Then again maybe I'm just a little old fashioned. Got off work early so I'll be able to get some good time in on it.
