  • time to build a proper engine

When I planned out my B6t swap I never expected the car to handle the HP like it does. I simply threw together a pile of the best used parts I could find. It was a pretty standard performance B6t " on the cheap" build.
Fast forward a year. This car handles a healthy b6t like the factory put it in their to begin with. In fact, on the track I'm often wishing for more. My current setup put down 161 hp and 160 ft lbs on a 105 degree day with no intercooler. That's roughly 180 or so at the crank. 3 times the factory hp and the car is still very mild mannered. Hmmmmm. Time for more power!
In this thread I'll document my new engine build, the theory behind my madness and the parts and procedures I use.

    Here is a start.

between 200 and 250, which seems simple enough. However, it's the way I want to make the hp and the way it'll be used that require the forged internals. I'd like about the same TQ curve that the car has now, but I want it to keep pulling till at least 7500 rpm. Now the peak torque is at 4k and it drops off at 6k. I'd like 180ft.lbs for at least 4k rpm. That will put me where I need to be to run down the Porsche gt3 in my class.

Awesome! Those rods fit the B6 & BP correct? Which motor are you building?

Please go BP dude. Way more potential than a b6.

Then you can tune it to use only as much of that potential as you want.

Don't worry guys, I'll do a BP too, but this car remains B6. I do agree that the BP is a much better engine than the B6 in a lot of ways, but this car will remain true to it's RS1600 formula. The BP will go into a festiva with some extra structural support

I don't want much more than 200 ft.lbs of torque. This will already be a detuned setup, since this engine could easily hold 400+ Hp, but I'm using a garrett gt2860 with a corksport vj14 turbine housing. This turbo has made over 250hp on similar setups a few times before. I've sized the compressor so that I should remain within this units maximum efficiency range throughout my target torque curve. I'll still be using the capri XR2 management, with different injectors (probably some 32 lb ev14 Bosch units) and a custom tune. I'm going to try to reach my goal without an intercooler, I'll retain the water/meth injection. I've done this sort of thing a few times before so I'm not worried about this. The piston tops, combustion chambers and exhaust ports will be ceramic coated for this.

I've been piling up parts for awhile now for this build. What I have so far:

1.Hand picked (by me) b6d block (91 capri N/A) magna fluxed, and it's perfectly straight and has very little cylinder wear even with 190k miles on the car! Good casting!
                      2. 89 Miata head with less than 100k miles, had original head gasket, didn't appear to have ever been hot.
                      3. Long nose crank, straightened, micro polished and Plasma Nitride coated.
                      4. ACL race rod and main bearings.
                      5. +1mm supertech ss intake and exhaust valves, Ti retainers, dual valve springs and viton seals.
                      6. Wiseco 8.5:1 forged pistons (79mm)
                      7. Manley H beam rods
                      8. Toga blueprinted oil pump.
                      9. mx3 pulleys and alternator for ribbed belt swap.
                      10. edible (apple flavor) underwear
                      11. fel-pro gaskets/seals for everything else.
                      12. Miata cams (to break the engine in and get a baseline, then it gets HKS cams).
                      13. Gates blue timing belt
                      14. Cometic MLS head gasket
                      15. corksport turbine housing, black ceramic coated
                      16. brand new gt2860r turbo
                      17. corksport downpipe (currently being modded).
                      18. Jap/euro spec GTX intake manifold and fuel rail.
                      19. ARP head bolts
                      20. Brand new, from Mazda, B6t exhaust manifold that has been black ceramic coated.

I'll take some pics this weekend.

Here is my block after hot tank and magna flux. Yes that is a BP block right next to it (and you guys thought I was bluffing about the BP, lol)

Corksport Turbine housing with gt2860r ball bearing turbo.

I put a BP in Tweak a couple of months ago. It just slowed her down. Lol! :p

I would be interested in knowing more about the gt2860r turbo you are putting on. What kind of car would it come on. And how you put the vj14 housing on it. You set a whole new goal for what I want my car to be like.
