  • my little baby red car

hey guys. so im getting pretty serious with my mods to my aspire. i have done about too much maintainence work in the last month, so hopefully i just get to do fun stuff from here on out. glad it was all just normal replacement from high mileage parts. heres what ive changed out so far

    1. kia rio front suspension
    2. exedy clutch
    3. water pump (boy was that a learning experience)
    4. alternator (learned that the belt needs to be tighter than you think it should be)
    5. tires (i didnt personally do this)
    6. when i first bought the car i built a very interesting designed "header" for it out of conduit piping, but i did get me to a steady 38 summer mpg, could tell the torque curve was different than stock, dont like it very much.
    7. filled my trany motor mounts with window weld (thought it would fix my cars violent shaking from take off, turned out being the clutch)
    8. i built my own muffler!!! i think it sounds pretty cool
    9. built a dome light with high power led lights
    10. redid the little coolant collector pipe that combines the baby line from the block by the coolant temp sensor and heater core, clear up to the water pump intake, thing was leaking by that little baby coolant line.
    11. rigd up my tail lights so that my rear window defrost heater button turns them on, car kept randomly blowing the fuse that went to that and my instrument panel lights, still dont have instrument panel lights...but this doesnt bother me too terribly much.

here what i have planned out for the future
    1. im to build a turbo manifold for the girl that will place the turbo over where the stock air box is originally, i think it would make the turbo a little more visually friendly. i plan on doing some low boost levels with a 3000gt turbo and stock wastegate. and ill set up some version of a homemade water/meth injection system for it. im still in the works of designing a linear flow regulator to ramp up the water meth injection proportionate to the boost level.
    2. mill head about 20 thousandths, and install a new cometic mls head gasket.
    3. head work while the head is off, maybe a small port job, nothing too flow since i desire port velocity for low end torque.
    4. i want to use some rebar and weld in onto my trany bottom plate, the thing the mounts go into, to stiffen it up a bit. pictures of that to come.

here is the start of my hot air intake project. DSCN0010.jpgDSCN0011.jpgthe aspire air box main breather hole is close to the side, so i had to cut the inside pvc connector into a pacman so that i could have side clearences.

look at the cut i had to make for the dipstick. i should have bought a 90 degree bend that had a little more radius so that it would have missed it. but i really wanted this pipe to be under my header(see above picture for my unrefined header design.)aluminum foil isnt going to be permenant, but i couldnt find any sheet metal here at my parents place.DSCN0016.jpgDSCN0017.jpg

DSCN0020.jpgDSCN0021.jpgsheet sled bumper cover to come tomorrow, hopefully.
so i took the car out for a 20 minute cruise with that warm air sucker working. it seems to be performing flawlessly. i wish i could get a temp probe into my intake pipe close to the tb to see what kind of temps the engine is seeing. thanks to my parents for the heated garage. and the wonderful 5" pit to work with. +5 to anyone that can see the hanging deer head. that was my dads kill of the month.

I'd like to see some numbers as to how much the hot air intake helps your fuel economy. Keep us posted.

i ment 5' pit. this summer when i was driving i kept record on every tank, very consistant 38. one week of mostly work driving netd me about 32. that was with some sub freezing temps though. im hoping to get that back up to 38.

Won't the pvc melt being that close to the exhaust? I've bent pvc before just using boiling water.....

at the closest its with a half inch of the exhaust. i poped the hood after my 20 minutes of driving and check it to find the pipe in its original condition. maybe if the pipe wasnt constantly circulating fresh air around it. im shooting for intake temps around 130f. if the cars can run fine in the hottest of hot summer days, why not try even a little warmer.

does anyone have a great idea of how i can attack that thin plastic with some sort of classiness to my front bumper. maybe something like those plastic sheetrock inserts that the screws then go into and spread the plastic out. or maybe the silly car interior plastic snap holders... anyone please!
