  • Well when i pulled the valve cover first thing i was looking for was to see if the hla were collapsing, well that was not the case, they were pumped up but what i noticed is i had play.. as in i could move the rocker up and down on the valve stem, so i got the feeler gauges out and had around .034 of gap between hla and valve stem, and no i am not using shims matt made my valve stems longer to make up for the extra lift. So i pulled one rocker arm off and removed one of the hla's and mesured the pumped up length and gave that number to matt and he is gonna see if that matches the new ones he has at the shop, what we are wondering is if the extra spring rate has damaged the hla's because matt double and triple checked that the hla's were tight with no gap. Also i put one in the vice to make sure it wasnt seized, and it did move and pushed the oil out then was able to squeeze by hand... so that tells me they are pumping up just fine. Yes the rocker arm is fully seated in fact matt had it all built and ready when he shipped it to me, thats why hes confused as to what happened and why there is a gap now...its just not making any sense. Tomorrow im gonna get my uncles dial gauge and check to see what the gaps on all the valves are at.

Matt suggested autolite xp 3924 plugs they are platinum and he said platinum is better for high compression, i did not know that but fine by me cuz they last like forever.

Autolite XP3924's are Iridium from what I just looked up. I was planning on using Iridiums or trying some E3's.

*edit* Well Fram's website says they are double platinum.. thats weird.

        • Really, the only place it could develop excess clearance or lash is in the HLA. It could be that the HLA isn't strong enough to open the dual springs initially and it compresses the HLA until the internal hydraulic pressure is high enough to over come the springs. You could maybe try just running the outer springs and keep the RPM low....just to see if they stay pumped up and quiet. I can't think of what else it could be, unless the cam and/or roller follower is wearing down...which is highly unlikely, at least on the cam. I'm not sure how hard the roller on the rocker arm is. Matt will figure it out.

Well that was the initial thought was too much spring pressure.. But when I told him the rockers that have the love facing down (so no pressure on the valve) they have a gap between hla and valve stem... He said there should be no gap.. Cuz the spring inside the hla keeps them fully expanded... So for some reason I have excessive lash

If it was the hla collapsing frotoo much spring pressure then I would have been able to squish the hla by hand... But I could not, So that means they were not bleeding off.

              • stick a big resonator in the mid pipe, that will make this thing sound way better

Yeah I have my eye on the flow master hp2 shorty, I think it will work great just need to measure underneath and make sure I can fit it.

                  • I know what you're saying. I have had several HLA's totally freeze up (rock solid) in the partially collapsed position before. I can't tell you why. It takes a large amount of pressure to compress the HLA if it has oil in it and is functioning properly. I've seen them do some pretty weird things, LOL. I keep a zip lock bag full of new HLA's in the glove box. If the HLA's are fully expanded then I would check the lobes and rocker arm rollers for wear.....I can't think of anywhere else the extra lash could come from unless metal is disappearing from somewhere. Hang in there, you'll figure it out....every engine build has these unforseen issues and bugs that need worked out.

                    • Yeah im not worried about it, matt is working with me to help figure it out. I dont see any wear at all.

                      • Any chance some fine foreign material from the engine got trapped in some of the lifters? Pop one apart and let the oil from one of the lifters go through a paper towel. If the lifter is for sure pumped up and staying up then it will be interesting to hear what changed ! Really cool you are leading the way here with Matt!

                        • Wow. Sounds mean but a bit overwhelming imho, if the tone was just deeper... Those first 500 miles have to be torture, that thing just screams bury the pedal!! Seriously though, awesome build man!

Thanks it's been a lot of fun and can't wait to open it up... And yeah I'm talking to Matt and he suggested a resonator I'm gonna get one and put it in before the muffler and that should take the edge off but still sound good.

                            • I'm in love with my gigantor resonator. It makes the car so ridiculously quiet under 3000RPM. Mind you, being turbo, I have a bit of an advantage when it comes to exhaust muffling, but it still helped a considerable amount with tone and volume reduction.

Yeah I like the sound at idle, it just has a raspy sound when you drive and is crazy loud.. So resonator should take care of both those problems
