So I have begun collecting parts for the freshening up of the B6. I'm waiting for the Harbor freight parking lot sale to get an engine stand before i start tearing things apart too much Id really like to get some kind of engine lift but they are pretty expensive for something ill use once or twice, so far. Hopefully i can make a friend who has one i can borrow for a weekend. So far i have gotten most all Gaskets a water pump and a timing belt. Ive been driving the Mazda around just for fun and i can already tell that it has a little more pick up and go that the b3 and that makes me excited!

Just to confirm, a b3 oil pan is the same as a b6 right.

            Finally!

Now I get an empty engine bay photo as well! Excitement.

Now I need to get this title mess sorted out so I can rip into the Mazda.

Well here it goes, productive day

              The donor b6

              First look under valve cover

              Head is pulled off.

Lots of carbon in the combustion chamber/on the piston

              The underside

              Everything laid out so nice

To the car wash we go to get the caked grease off the block.

I got most of the major sludge off the block. The head gasket is burned on there pretty good. I used the high pressure from the gun to peel most of it up. Then I ran out of quarters.

                Then I turned this

                Into this four times.

The carbon on the face of the piston was terrible. There was at least 1mm build up over the whole thing with deposits up to 3 mm high. Inside the ring grooves on the bottom was about a 2 mm layer. On the drain holes in the oil ring groove on every set of holes there was at least one that was stopped up completely with carbon. I got it out with an old ring.

What could cause all this carbon? I glanced at the spark plugs and they were not gapped properly at all. Maybe that's it?

Also on one or two the side of the piston that faces forward and the side that faces back had slight scratches. Should I be worried about that?

Dropped off the block to get it honed and tested for cracks.

Ordered from rockauto new valves and springs(for less that 30 bucks why not) and crank shaft bearings all 9 of them an oil pump and a few other assorted parts.

Also ordered a lower gasket set from AutoZone. I hope to have it all put together by the end of July.

                  Only time will tell though.

                        So lots of progress today.

                        Got the crank in

Got a shiny new oil and water pump

After that I got my pistons shiny new rings.

Looks decent eh, still a little crap on the piston face but I didn't want to pay to get it off. It's 1000x better than it was.

                        In case you forgot.

I didn't have a ring compressor so I used a screwdriver and slowly worked them in

                        As it sits right now.

I didn't realize the rods were so much bigger in the b6 and I had clearance issues with the oil.drain. my trusty sawzall fixedv that for me. All amazing now.

I will have ac in this car. I opted for the aluminum bracket as opposed to the cast iron one due to its lower profile and it was a billion times easier to clean.

Tomorrow I will disassemble the head to prepare it for the shop on Tuesday.
