preface: well as any project, its going to take longer than a week to get it done i work full time as many do so i only have select weekends (and and a tight wallet) to actually work on it but im going to try to get something up at least every Saturday/Sunday well here goes
so far my festiva life has been short and alittle cruel my first festiva i bought for $600 (88 rust bucket) and i only had it for about 1 1/2 days before it caught fire it was a complete loss, so that same day it caught fire my dad had me go pay his car payment for him and it just so happens that the car dealer just took one in on trade(89) and i picked it up for $525 (under 600 even after tax and title)so thats the car i have now
well i hate the color red so i rattle canned it black
as for the motor that i had picked out for the swap well i wish i did more research before i went to the jy and pulled one out, well i was looking for a bp/b6 engine so i read somewere that some select kia's had the bp in them well the kia i picked was too new i guess i look at the hood sticker and it said 1.8L so i jumped the gun and bought it then i got home with is and try to fit my spare festiva tranny i had at the time and the bolt holes nowhere near lined up, so that night i got on the computer and finally did the well needed research well it turns out i have a kia T8D motor, if i did my research right kia bought the tooling rights for the bp/b8 engine so i basically have a kia made bp. well with out further a due, some pictures
when i got the transmission i planned of saving some money on a clutch if it was still any good on the jy donor car well it was crapped out so for a month or so i keep procrastinating on buying one, however with fathers day this past weekend i ended up buying my dad a clutch for his mazda 626 because we thought it was going out (spent all fathers day together replacing his clutch) well is clutch was still like new but his pressure plate crapped out on us, it turn out that a clutch disk from a 97 mazda 626 fits and works in a 03 kia spectra engine who knew
crapped out kia clutch
used mazda clutch
well time for some bad news i ruined my transmission trying to slip the engine and tranny together. as i was mating them up i heard a clank like metal against metal i didnt think much of it until i tried to slip an axle stub in to turn the input shaft to get it align with the clutch, it slippen right in and out now thats a problem so i took my inspection camera and put it inside the transmission and found that the diff. gears slipped out so i tore the tranny apart not knowing what i was doing i had never worked on a tranny bigger than a dirtbike well heres some pictures
heres the way its suppose to be
well it turns out if you dont have a least a axle stub or even a screwdriver in it they have a chance of slipping out like this
so i was bummed for the rest of the day but as i was falling asleep last night i thought that this is actually a good thing because now i have a hollow shell of a transmission (very light now) to help me make mounts when i go to swap engines
as for the ignition system since i went distributor-less running wasted spark i had to buy a megasquirt i went with the ms2 diy kit
now an under the skirt view
now with the megasquirt i was going to need a fuse box but didn't want to spend any money so i 3d printed one!
i also 3d printed an ica adaptor the i made in google sketchup (also fusebox make in sketchup) i couldn't find the pinout of the kia iac anywhere on line but i had a dodge one that i had laying around that i knew the pinout for so 3d printer to the rescue (all parts made from abs plastic)
also since im using an 89 carbed festi i was going to need a fuel pump and regulator ebay to the rescue now lol
now for some random pictures
im using a ford 6 wire maf sensor (anyone know how much boost they are good up to)
heres the welder thats going to be doing all the work
also this is me using the input shaft of the now broken transmission as a clutch alignment tool
p.s. if my grammar or spelling is bad oh well your just here for the pictures anyway
