  • TWFodor's B8me Build

    Hello everyone!

It's time for me to create my own build thread for my 91 GL 4-speed, but first, some history on the car:

I bought my 91 back in September from the St. Louis area. It wasn't running at the time so I had to tow it home. The previous owner had just swapped the head and the engine wasn't completely put back together.
When I bought the car, it had a second gen b6 block and a B3 16V sohc head. I also received the original 8V head with the car. For more info you can check out my original thread for questions I had: http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...mbly-questions

    IMG_0087.jpgIMG_0088.jpgIMG_0089.jpgIMG_0091.jpg

    Current modifications:
    Aspire brake swap
    Sound deadener
    Escort dome light
    88-89 grill
    13 in Konig rims
    Tinted windows
    Ebay short shifter
    Battery relocated to trunk

    My plans for the car:
At this point it is running pretty well despite the b6/b3 combo, but there are still a few issues. I purchased a B8 engine last weekend and have begun to clean it up. I plan on doing some basic preventative maintenance before I swap it in.
I'm thinking mid to late March for the swap, when it begins to warm up a bit because I despise working in the cold. Right now I'm focusing on gathering all the necessary parts for the swap so it can be done in one day.

    Planned modifications:
    B8-me engine swap
    5 speed transmission
    Coilovers
    Roof rack
    14 inch rims
    Clear corner lights
    ...Many more!

    Updates to come!

I did a little more work on the engine this weekend since it was so nice but I ran into something that concerned me.

I posted the pictures on my new photobucket below. Take a look. Port 1 and 2 look a lot worse than 3 and 4. Should I be concerned? Pardon my ignorance, this is pretty new to me.

You mean the black stuff? Are 1 and 2 the shinier ones?

I'd change the valve stem seals if they are that shiny and you have good compression.

Yeah 1 and 2 are the shiny black ones. I thought I had added a title for them but I guess not.
It just concerned me because they looked so much worse. Can changing the seals be done without removing the head?

Yep. You can feed compressed air into the cylinder to hold the valves up or a more low tech way is to feed string into the cylinder to fill it up.

I'd check the compression first though, before I changed anything.

I had some great weather this weekend so I made some good progress with the engine tear down and clean up. Managed to get the water pump off. Real nasty in there. I also managed to degrease the engine block and I sanded some of the more rusted areas. I then topped it off with some 2000 degree engine enamel paint. I think it turned out pretty well. I also degreased the exhaust manifold and painted it with the same paint as the block.

Here are some pictures of my progress:

That engine looks pretty clean any idea how many miles are on it? I'm guessing not a lot or it came from someone that took care of it. Just a heads up, sometimes the 4 pin throttle position senors like what is on that engine don't play well with the festiva ECUs. I know from personal experience they won't work with a manual trans ECU, I'm not positive about the auto trans cars though.

About 107k miles. This engine was originally from an automatic, so I purchased a manual TB. I didn't have it at the time I posted the original engine photos.

It is supposed to warm up to the mid 50s next week so hopefully I'll be able to get most of this installed.

Funny we will almost be twins, just bought this B8-me swapped festy. and was looking on my local CL and almost bought the same rims you have there. I plan on turboing it in the future when I have to replace my clutch. The stock festy clutch holds well until you put the pedal to the floor in peak torque area, then shes slips a little on you. Are you planning on and upgraded clutch ?

Not necessarily "upgraded" but I bought the Exedy replacement clutch. I've heard good things about it
