What was your ring gap? That's critical on these engines. Most aftermarket rings come out around .012", but I've taken apart 150k mile turbo engines with a .007" top ring end gap. Twice the gap on fresh rings is a big problem.

I'd have to look at the package. I'm already in bed now. I got about halfway thru the assembly and realized I put the main bearings in wrong and had to take it back down. Here's the rest of the pics.

And here's me putting the bearings in wrong the first time

Here's part 1 of the bottom end assembly. I borrowed a sweet hone from work to clean up the cylinder walls. The cross hatching isn't a 45 but it'll do. I also cleaned up the internal parts in a super cleaner bath, seafoam bath and then a wd40 clean followed by cleaning with compressed air. I'm taking a small break to get some food and then I'll be putting everything back together. I am going to be reusing the old rings. They're in pretty good shape.

I should have a very picture heavy update coming this weekend. I will be assembling the bottom end since all of the parts came in. Friday I will be ordering the head gasket and sending the vc off for powdercoat so I'm guessing I'll have the entire motor assembled in just a few weeks here.

True you'll never need new rings again

They are the same, and yes, they are still available through Mazda. Did you see the price?

Are the Capri rings different than miata ones? 1.6 miata pistons and rings are still available according to Jimellismazdaparts.com.

I'm seeing manual pistons in standard, .25, and .50 with ring sets in the same. No listings for auto pistons just rings in standard and .50 sizes.

I ordered all of my bottom end parts. Piston rings, rod bearings, big nose oil pump, timing belt, water pump and rear main seal. I'm going to try to pull the old motor out this Friday. That way I can get the flywheel sent off when I send off the head. Once the head is back, all that's left is assembling the motor, wiring in the fuel pump, re jetting the carbs and installing everything. The ETA is March 20th.
What rings did you buy? I haven't had any luck finding decent rings for these engines. The aftermarket rings have twice the end gap that they should have, and never seal correctly. This results in low compression and oil consumption. On my last 2 b6 engines (b6d, and B6t) I've reused the original rings with great success.
