  • Roadworthy certificate, registered and new number plates attached. As of today, replaces the green '97 Demio as my daily driver.

First decent drive this afternoon, as in, first highway on ramp, first 5th gear pull etc. Boosting around 10psi. Am grinning ear to ear

    • Good stuff!!!
I finally got mine running and idling right. After like 4 days of mystery fault finding

      • Installed a water/meth kit today, seems to be working. Waiting on a couple of digital temp guages to arrive so will be able to see before/after temps.

Also ordered a R55/56 mini cooper intercooler, it will mount across the front, behind the bumper.

        • Intercooler has been fitted

Engine bay has been tidied up a bit

Vacuum chamber/hub made from aluminium tube

And I have fabricated an additional front engine mount to stop the engine twisting back towards the firewall under heavy acceleration. Intake was hitting the brake booster, as there isn't much clearance there

            • Does anyone know what intake manifolds are available here in the states to fit a B6T that will orientate the intake opening towards the left side as pictured above? I know some of you racers have hand fabbed them. I don't have the skills for that. I'm looking for a bolt on. Your replies would be appreciated. Thank you!

              • That's a B5 engine, they're available here in late 90s Kia/Mazda platforms. Also look for mx-3 RS.

                • It's a 3rd gen B6. Engine/manifold is from a 1994 Ford Laser, which I believe were Ford Escorts over there. Mazda 323 from similar years should have them too.

                  • They didn’t get the later lasers (escorts) in the USA.
You’ll find it in the mx3 but you’ll have to get the entire head as the manifold flanges have different patterns.

                    • Thanks guys, I will be going to the U-Pull it soon and will check the late 90 Kias and Mazdas. I have never seen an MX3 RS. The only Mx3 that I looked at had the goofy (that's what I thought when I first saw one) 16 valve sohc engine. I now know this was a B6ME engine and I know I am getting off topic bet I have read somewhere the only intake that fits (without modifying) a B6ME is a B6ME. All of the USA Escorts had the 1.8 engine. It seems to me that the intake on Reds engine will #1 allow for cam cover removal with less work and #2 should flow better versus the B6T set up. Why would you want to run the air into the manifold and then immediately amke it run into a wall and change directions. That doesn't seem conducive to good airflow does it? #3 it looks a lot slicker.

                      • I'm not sure how it flows vs the turbo manifold. It's a VICS manifold, has an internal butterfly valve that changes the intake length. With the matching ECU, I think that change happens at around 6000rpm. As I'm using the B6T ECU which doesn't control the VICS, I have wired the solonoid for that valve to a switch on the dash.
Been trying to work out which setting is best - ie open or closed for below 6000rpm. Not really a noticeable difference either way it seems. Will eventually wire it into a frequency switch once I decide which way to go, and use the tach signal to trigger it.

                        • Very interesting. I have heard of the VICS system but since I never owned a car with it I'm not familiar with it's operating principles. I thought it was variable valve timing. If the system changes the intake length @ 6000 rpm I guess I would not worry about it. I don't run my cars up that high....usually.

The fe3 powered Kia Sportage uses the same principle. It’s supposed to generate more torque on take off but I don’t know...
I honestly think it was just a gimmick

                            • Yeah especially with turbo, intercooler and half a meter of intake piping, I doubt an extra couple of inches in the manifold would do very much.
lI'll be putting it on a dyno at some stage, and will run with it open, and again with it closed. Compare the line graphs and see if they cross over.
