  • PROJECT JAKE

    Hello and Welcome!

As some of you know I had a perennially unfinished project in my aqua 121 named MOZDA.
I Progressed well with that build, but when it came to finishing the build, I was missing a bunch of parts that I had stupidly/mistakingly disposed of. I also let the project drag on too long and registration on this car had lapsed, meaning i would have to get an engineers certificate for all the mods before I could even drive the car on the road. This in turn meant that I would have to get the car towed back and forth from the engineers place, and was quickly becoming too much of a headache.

But luckily as if by divine timing, I came across Jake (I named him Jake after the dog on Adventure time).
Jake is a 1989 Mazda 121 in yellow with only 148,000KM (around 92,000 miles), and is in absolute mint condition.

This wasn't the first encounter I had with jake. I had tried to buy him on a previous occasion from the owner previous to the guy who sold him to me. Jake was purchased by a gentleman around 2009 and he kept him in his garage for a future project. Sadly, this gentleman passed away and the car sat in the garage for a few years before his wife decided to sell it. This is when i first laid eyes on this car, She was asking a ridiculous amount for it ($3500 iirc), but i still made contact and made an offer. She wouldn't budge, so the car remained listed for sale for approx 1 year. I made contact various times and by the end she got tired of me pestering her so she blocked me and I could no longer contact her.
    I gave up.

    Fast forward 18 months....
I found the car for sale again. This time its new owner, who had absolutely no idea about what can be done with these cars, decided to put it up for sale after having to replace the driveshafts, and clutch, and now the rear shock absorber had stopped working. That was enough for him to give up on the car. I bought it for a steal $800!!!

My plans are simple- upgrade the car with all the components I had on the aqua car.

I will update this build log as things get done. Ive already done a fair amount of work and will post all work done as time allows it.

Just to enrich the fountain of information on this forum. The mazda 121 was known as a DA, DB, DY. DA being the equivalent to the WA festiva, While the DB was was the newer rounder shaped sedan known in japan as the Autozam revue, and the DY was the third and final generation that was built until 2002.

The DA came in two series, the DA1031 from 1986-1989, and the DA1032 1989-1990 (most of these were built in 1989 and sold new until 1990).
The DA1032 saw sales plummet due to the entry of much higher tech EFI cars entering the market (daihatsu charade, suzuki swift got, EG civic, AE92 corolla to name a few). This makes the DA1032 a very hard to find vehicle.

The differences between both series were minor. Below is what I noticed thus far:

    Updated interior fabric and headrests

    Height adjustable Driver's seat

    Radio relocated to lower console

    New grille

Did the previous owner pay her full asking price?

        Thanks!

The previous owner paid $1400 without registration or roadworthy certificate.
        I offered her $1500 12 months earlier.

I think her beef with me was a personal one. I pushed really hard to get the car and probably went too far.
I wasnt aware of her emotional attachment, I found out about her husband from the guy who sold it to me

I've been waiting for a build thread on this car. Wow, Jake is a phenomenal example! Great find!

Great find and story. Maybe one day when you get it finished, you can go to the woman's house who lost her husband and apologize for bugging her and that you didn't realize the situation surrounding the car and show her that you eventually got the car and plan on taking good care of it. Since her husband had an emotional attachment to it, she might appreciate that.

Also, it's an American thing, but I can't say the name Jake without saying Jake from State Farm.
